I still do all my own work minus tire changes and alignments. Engine or transmission are no sweat and I have plenty of garage space, it's just time consuming. Then again, if I am shopping for a running replacement...that can be had for ~10-20k leaving my current (if broke) GX as a parts pig. I won't go back to a 4Runner...I have way more headroom in my MR2.
I've looked at the 550 and I like it...but I prefer to buy at the 7-10 year-old mark.
I drove a 2023 4Runner a few weeks ago that a family member recently picked up. Cherry condition, has relatively modern tech and safety features wrapped in a proven/reliable platform. It should last them 15-20+ years. But....it was slow! Couldn't believe the difference in power and responsiveness compared to my GX470. I'd have a very hard time driving a V6 powered 4Runner or Tacoma after being so used to my V8.

The crap transmission is a big part of that. Have a 5th gen T4R in the family. Hate it.

I have the same transmission in my GX470. It's actually quite good, but that's because I put a $1,200 valve body from Australia in it. It was mushy when it was stock. Now it shifts nice and firm, and the boarder torque curve of the 2UZ-FE probably helps as well.

I've had several 5th gens since 2015 and I loved them all. They are slow for sure, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I do prefer the overall comfort of my GX and it's definitely faster and feels less strained at 90 mph on the freeway.... But if my GX got totaled and I couldn't get a 22/23 replacement, I'd buy another 4R.

One could consider the time and money spent on cars and such while considering them a form of "entertainment". Not do dissimilar to spending a few thousand dollars taking the family to Disney World, or as a close friend of mine, his hobby is wine. Probably tens of thousands of dollars in wine. Or worst yet for entertainment cost, boating, and I'm not referring to inflatables, kayaks or dinghy's. I mean the sailing yachts I used to race on or motor yachts.
It comes down to what one's interest is. Ours happens to be exploring open spaces with practical and reliable vehicles!
This is a great way to look at the $$$ aspect of modding our vehicles. I've come to love wrenching on mine and whipping them around off road so thinking of it as a "fun" expense is realistic and makes it feel better too

They certainly are great looking rigs. It's a shame Toyota didn't carry over the V8 version like the 4th gen!

I had a 2023 Lunar Rock TRD ORP 4runner that I liked a lot, and getting it OTT Tuned made it much more fun to drive... then I drove a 2023 GX460, liked it better in every way, and traded the 4runner in for one.

I'm not exactly sure why the GX's aren't more popular considering how they stack up against 5th gen 4runners (maybe its because the 4runners look "cool" while GX460s look like a dentist's wife's car) but I'm much happier in a GX.

The big advantage of the V8 in the GX is that it comes with a 6,500 pound tow rating. We've towed our 4K pound camper thousands and thousands of miles with the GX - including from MO all the way to Glacier NP - and I've used it to tow my compact tractor here in MO (~5,800# with trailer). Granted my GX is re-geared, but it has plenty of towing power with the V8, and had no problem towing the camper 75 mph with the cruise on (or 65 mph with the tractor). I think a 4Runner certainly could tow, but they are only rated to 5,000# and the acceleration would be dangerously slow with anything other than a small utility trailer or ultralight camper behind it.

I talked one of my buddies into buying a 2020 GX for the same reason. Nothing else checked the boxes of reliability, 4x4 capability, and tow rating like a GX. He uses his to haul is 5,000# boat and family of 4 to the lake.

It's hard to know what new vehicles to buy these days. Even the Toyotas are suspect. So you think "I'll just get a good ol' V8 pickup." But even those are crap now - the GM 6.2s are blowing up by 40k nowadays. And their 5.3s and 3.0 diesels are bad too. It makes me sad that GM has forgotten how to build a V8, those used to be the gold standard.

This is why I grabbed a 6 year old LX570 earlier this year. I am convinced it will outlive me (I'm 64).

I was #2 on the list at the Toyota dealer in town for the Land Cruiser when it was announced. As it got closer to arriving started thinking twice about a new release, even from Toyota, and drove down to test drive a T4R OR Pro they had in stock. It had the same problem that my second gen Taco had it couldn't get out of its own way. Updates in the cabin weren't that improved and after 11 years with the Taco wanted something with some more balls and nicer. Salesman had to almost physically twist my arm but got me to test drive a GX460 he had on the lot. Less than a mile into the test drive knew it was coming home with me.

4 bolt main 350 was a long time ago  Acid dip the block, punch the bores .010 20 or 30 over and mill the heads. Still have a bunch of tools in a wooden box in the garage that I will most likely never use again including a SUN timing light. Ring pliers are too large for small engines. And doubt I will ever need to use the metal oil spout that pierces the metal top on an oil can.

The 10 speed tranny that GM and Ford worked together on is trash in addition to the engines. Trying to get a replacement from either is next to impossible from what I have heard.

My first 4x4 was a 77 FJ55 so when I turned 65 a few years ago thought I'd get the new Land Cruiser as my last vehicle to book end it. Ended up with the GX460 and couldn't be happier. Will see at 100K how much work needs to be done to keep it and if too much work may look for a very lightly used Southern 22/23 GX460. Or see how the LX700 OT are doing by then. It wouldn't bother me if my 19 460 that I have ends up with a water side replacement and ends up being my last vehicle. Hopefully it will be quite a few years yet for both of us.

Oh my gosh! you just put me into an alzheimer's memory back flash of when I was a kid/young adult!

Yep, needs a mustache cut.

The fast food hangs out in the backyard, right next to the rifle target. Exactly 2 weeks ago yes the season was open

It gets insane on our property, this is half of them... We keep leaving the front door and oven door open but they just refuse to go in.

Oh yeah - forgot to mention the transmissions too!
