Our Highlander has a much more usable 3rd row space when the seats are folded down like that.

Changes such as that, less-reliable twin-turbo V6 engines, and high vehicle costs will likely result in me holding on to my 470 as long as possible, prior to upgrading to a 460 or a 3UR powered Tundra at some point :)

No issues with the 460, no need to fear that move when the time comes and lots of aftermarket for them now as well.

I'm gonna run my '12 @ 78k miles into the ground :)

I keep rigs a minimum of 15-20 years
With all that I'm replacing and all the maintenance I'm doing mine should be good to go for another half a mil. LOL

Maybe Prado badging??

Remindes me of a female soldier I had under my command a few years ago. She had the best first and last name ever: first: Mercedes; last: Prado. Now THERE's a name to be proud of!!
The Prado part would probably get dropped. I think Toyota did this last generation in most of Europe… no 200, just the 150 badged as “Land Cruiser”.

If all this is true and the 180 is coming to us as both a Lexus and a Toyota, I don’t see how the 4runner survives. We’ve also heard nothing about the next one either which is interesting.

I find it hard to believe that they’d ditch the 4Runner name plate that sells over 100K units per year in one country alone. That said, if they can centralize on one model world wide which is essentially the same vehicle and they think that the Land Cruiser nameplate on a “4Runner” in the states will sell just as well if not better, then maybe that’s the direction they are headed. I certainly can’t see a GX550 and both a Land Cruiser Prado 180 and 6th Gen 4Runner all being sold at the same time, it makes little sense as they would cannibalize each others sales and only confuse your average buyer.

I can almost guarantee they will never kill the 4R. Not everybody wants leather, wood and three climate zones. Especially the young on a budget.
Most young people, including myself back in the day, just want a bare bones capable off roader. Just after getting married we purchased a new Nissan extra cab 4x4 pickup. It was the most stripped version we could get. No A/C, nor anything "power" (windows, mirrors, etc.). Only an AM/FM radio. It's all we could afford and truthfully at that stage of our lives all we really needed. I think the only thing we opted for was the V6.
Now it's a different story. I WANT my heated and ventilated seats. I WANT my three climate zones of A/C. I WANT all my power options. I WANT all the leather, wood and soft touch surfaces. I WANT a good stereo!

If Toyota is bringing the next gen LC Prado over as a new US product, there are really only 3 options that make any sense.

1) The new GX becomes a 3 row unibody luxury crossover and the current role/market for the GX is filled by the LC Prado
2) The new 4Runner is updated to a more dedicated off-roader in the same vein as the Wrangler/Bronco and the LC Prado fills the current 4Runner's role.
3) One of them is going to become a dedicated EV.

Doubtful given the Lexus TX.

It sells well here but what are the numbers outside of the us? I have no idea, but my understanding is that it’s not available in most other places, but the Prado is. This may be a cost saving move… dump the 4runner and give everyone the prado.

No way they put the ‘Land Cruiser’ nameplate in the Lexus line. There are no names in their models, only alpha-numeric labels. Either we get a GX550 or we don’t get anything in the body on frame SUV realm outside of the current LX600.

I think it's much more likely that they drop the body-on-frame GX from Lexus and fill the "capable/rugged luxury SUV" segment with a Toyota Land Cruiser vs dropping the 4Runner name and having a Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX model.

I still think the most likely outcome, if the Land Cruiser name is coming back, is that the GX stays in its current place in the lineup, something fills the current 4Runner market, and something becomes a dedicated off-roader like the Wrangler/Bronco. In my mind the 4Runner becomes the dedicated off roader but that may actually be the Land Cruisers role.

Well they better come up with some type of Landcruiser or else NATO, WHO and all those other organizations (including terrorists) won't have any decent vehicles to move troops and gear with! All those Hundy's you see in new's clips are getting long in tooth.

I can't see them dropping the 4Runner nameplate. It would be one thing if they had slowly let the nameplate become irrelevant and poor-selling (like GM did with the Jimmy/Blazer, or Ford did with the Bronco). 4Runner sales keep increasing; they must be printing money with the nameplate being there have not been major updates in 13 years and some of the other technology in it dates all of the way back to 2002. But they could stick the nameplate on a less capable vehicle and send it the way of the Blazer, post-1991.

Out of all of their 4X4 SUVs, the GX seems to have the smallest market and the least widespread appeal (case in point: my wife choosing a Highlander over a GX for her family ride). Luxury buyers usually want something bigger (i.e., LX600, Grand Wagoneer), while suburbanites wanting a midsize but nice family hauler have lot of crossover options that drive better, get better fuel economy, have better tech, and are cheaper. Most 4x4 folks want something more aggressive looking (i.e., 4Runner, Bronco, Jeep). The GX doesn't check these boxes cleanly and is mainly a favorite of people with Lexus brand loyalty or connoisseur folks like us who like the V8, are willing to modify to make more capable, and don't care about the MPG.

I tend to agree (dropping the 4Runner comment), with the caveat that they DID almost let it die a slow death. It really should have been looking at major update / replacement in 15 or 16, but it never broke 50K units until 2014 (77 thousand) then, 97 thousand in 15, then went crazy in 2017. I think they were letting it die, no replacement planned, and were as shocked as anyone when it exploded and still sells strong now. It's almost like people got wind of it going away, went to buy the last years, and kept going. Toyota just keeps building them and printing money. We went to buy another last year after wrecking our '13, but availability and pricing were crazy, that's how we ended up with a GX, for less...

As long as the GX or 4R doesn't go the way of the Nissan Pathfinder.
Remember when the Pathfinder was like the 4R? Body on frame and a serious off roader?
Boy, the Pathfinders now are pathetic. Should call them Mallfinders now.

Yes, yes I do. Was a Nissan fan before I ever thought of owning a Toyota. Been in to Z cars for a long time, but found a 4Runner back in the day instead of an old Pathy, and here I am.

The old BOF Pathfinders and the Infiniti equivalent were equals to the 4Runners of their time, no doubt,

Yep. It was like Nissan was trying to copy Toyota's 4R. They basically took their (what they called) Hardbody pickup, got rid of the bed and added second row seats. EXACTLY what Toyota did! Everything cab forward was exactly like their trucks including interior.
I think the only real difference was that Nissan never did a solid front axle on their 4x4's.

Most people don’t know this… what I heard is that 2018 was originally supposed to be the last year of the 4runner
