Hmmm. Not a bad idea about parts. At the moment I am selling off all the parts I won't be using. About the only thing I need now is to rebuild my hard top. I am not sure it's worth the effort as the sides are badly rusted at the bottom and top and the drip rail is too far gone to repair.

Maybe over the summer, when my 40 is trail worthy, I can bring it over on the ferry and you can show me some local trails and then vice versa. Maybe I can talk some club members (seattlecruiserheads) into it also. :)

Just finished putting on a newer top. I don't have that many parts that I'm not going to use. There are a few local trucks being parted though. It's really hit and miss.

I've not been out in a few years here, I'm hoping to change that soon.

Shocks arrived. I ended up needing to install Ford shock towers because the shocks limited up travel.

Added radiator support rods

Not much else to report. Received new weatherstripping from SOR for the Windshield and rear sides. I was then able to install the soft top. I also received and installed new window regulators.

Repainted the bezel the correct color (it looks whiter than it is).

In a couple days I will order a custom rear drive shaft and then get the front shaft I have rebuilt. I have a custom rear long spline shaft, but it has 1310 ujoints. It needs too much work to make it cost effective to upgrade so I decided to upgrade to 1350's so I think it's best to just start from scratch on the rear.

I sealed off all the unused holes in the firewall. No pics. I still need to fab a bracket to mount a dome light on the windshield frame. I'll use the rear view mirror mount point. I also need to fab a CB mount.

Hey Steve,
When you were installing the top, did you find 81" from windshield frame top
to the back of the tub, or did you have to adjust it?
I believe mine sits at 82 right now.

Nick, I'm not sure about Moab in 2011. Depends on when. I forget the dates. I need to have a full cage by then. I plan on one this summer.

Marco, I'm not sure where you are measuring from exactly. You can measure when I bring it to a meeting. I hope to in January.

I will be taking my drive shafts to the shop next week. I hope to have them back in time for the next Cruiserhead meeting.

Picked up my rebuilt drive shafts this morning and installed them. Started up and dropped the tranny in gear and the engine died. Seems my torque converter doesn't release at low RPM. Pushed the 40 out and started it on the hill. Drove around a bit and found that the downshift cable is not set well. Adjusted it a bit and got all the gears to shift, but no throttle induced downshift.

I have tranny issues to resolve, but it's alive!!!

Steve- did you check that your tranny is full of fluid? Glad to hear it's back to being "streetable" again, can't wait to see it at the January meeting.

David

David,

Yes the fluid is filled :P

Double checked it after I drove it.

I bought my tranny and tcase from Rockstacker on Pirate. I pm'd him for advice and to see what he remembers about how the tranny was set up. It doesn't have a lockup electrical plug and I remember he said the tranny had been built up a bit. Maybe I need a different converter or something.

Glad to hear you've got it out on the road at least. I'm sure you'll figure out your tranny issues, just more tinkering! congrats on the test drive!

great build.. lots of good info ... where did u get that booster\master setup ? one more question. not trying to bash your skills cause i really like the build. "but" i noticed the welds on the motor mounts did not look like they had enough penetration as it could have. that being said i noticed the small lincoln welder in the back of a picture, also saw there was no gas tank.. flux cored wire maybe? again just trying to input and not bash... my build up should be coming up soon and i would like all the input as possible ...

Thanks Nick. It was great driving it finally.

77TPIFJ, yes I was using flux core wire since I don't have a bottle. Thanks for the input on the welds, I'll keep an eye on them. I'm not the greatest welder. Good luck with your build. It seems to take forever, but it's worth it.

I called the shop I bought my converter from. Seems when I ordered a non-locking converter they sent me a locking one. Without the lockup internals in place in the tranny the TC stays locked. I called a trans guy that is a friend of a friend and he advised me not to add the lockup stuff as it would end up being a bit expensive depending on what was actually needed. Cheaper to replace the TC.

So the TC shop is sending me a non-locking converter. I'll send the locking one back as soon as I get it swapped.

As for the TV cable, I might take the 40 to the friends shop to have it properly adjusted as well as having the leaking shift shaft seal replaced. I might try some more adjusting on my own once the converter is replaced, but I need some advice on setting it up since I thought it was perfect based on all the reading I had done about it.

I might remove the trans and TC this weekend if my wofe won't kill me. If she does want me dead then I'll wait until next weekend instead. I think I can have it apart, replaced, and back together in about 4 hours with some help. 8 hours otherwise. Any volunteers?

Just about done. The torque converter was mailed on Friday and arrived on Monday. I dropped the tranny, replaced the tc, and rehung the tranny in 1 1/2 hours Monday night. Man that tc was heavy to lift in and out from underneath by myself. My right shoulder still aches. I bought a tranny jack at HF and it did almost no good because of the design and the weight of the transfer case. I ended up needing a floor jack under the parking brake housing to keep it flat.

Anyway, I am just about done putting everything back together. I spent about 30 min yesterday and the same today. I should have the work finished tomorrow morning and be ready for another test drive tomorrow after work.

Drive line is back together. I just need to top off the tranny fluid. I'll do that after work and go for a test drive. I have an appointment at the exhaust shop Saturday morning to rework the installation so I need to have it running right so I can drive it over there.

My test drive went mostly well last night. I filled the trans then dropped it in gear. Normal idle in drive and reverse.

Drove down my hill and went on a side street. No shifting out of second. I pulled over to adjust the TV cable and then the engine quit. Out of gas :o After walking back 4 blocks for a can (had 3 gallons just in case) came back and fired up again. Adjusted the TV cable a little and the trans shifted normally. All up and down shifts were perfect.

Was on my way up the hill to my house and heard a loud metalic bang. Sounded like a pinion tooth to me. Didn't happen again. Tomorrow early I'll jack the rear up and check the feel of each tooth at the pinion. If that isn't it I'll start looking at every weld, bolt, etc.

Still I'm pretty jazzed! Need to set the fuel gauge tomorrow then (if nothing is briken) take it to the exhaust shop to rework the tail pipe section.
