Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

Hi Steve,

Great build! I'm so glad right now that I have bought a frame off resto to start my conversion with, at least I wont have to take it down to the frame!! (knock on wood)https://forum.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/bang.gif

Just reading your last few months show me that I need to be very very thorough with my trans set up and check everything twice!!! Thanks for that!!! :D

I'm working on it as fast as work and family allow. It will be a few more weeks as I just can't take any time to work on it right now. I think I can spend lots of time on it next weekend. So I maybe three or four weeks from being able to take it out... Woohoo.

So Tor, where can I take it to gently wheel it? I want to get back into it slowly and make sure nothing is going to fail for poor quality work... :D

My 40 now has 2 trips under it's belt. A few issues came up.

The front brakes don't grab enough. I ordered better pads and I'll see how those work out before getting drastic.

I replaced the fuel pump since it was leaking oil and gas. The new one put out so much pressure that the float/needle/seat were overwhelmed and fuel came out the top of the vents. That was on my first wheeling run. The engine kept dying as it was running WAY rich. The carb seems have a rich running problem even after a second new pump went it. It seems fine at sea level, but real rich up at 5k feet. I'm going to lean it out at the staging area next time to see if that helps before rebuilding the carb again.

Gave away my tire carrier and started building a new one. The bumper is done (no pics yet) and the carrier will be done in a few weeks. Have to work on my wife's car for a while so the 40 sits.

Rear springs were junk. They were so worn that I had major rub and the back end sat too low. I had a second set of 60 springs that I intended to use in front, but repurposed them for the back. What a difference! The rear cross member is 2" higher than with the worn out springs. My second trip was with the newer springs and they worked way better.

The front tires got into the fenders something fierce. We had to do some trail repairs (beat on the fenders with hammers). I trimmed the front lips back and moved the lights up as high as I could. The clearance on my second trip was good.

On my second trip I got seperated from the group. No CB. That sucked. Bought a temporary magnet base antenna for now so I can keep in touch with the group next time. Later on I'll figure out a permanent mounting for the radio and antenna.

Overall I was impressed with how easy the truck is to drive now. Power steering - WOW! Worth every penny! I installed a shift kit in my trans and I think it made a huge difference. The engine/trans braking is on par with a manual in first gear and very good in second. I also wired up a manual switch for the torque converter. I can lock it up in 2nd and 3rd as well as 4th. I tried it on the trail just to see if it would help on the down hill sections and I just don't need it. Plus the guy at the trans shop said I'd burn my clutches fast if I used it that way. Nice to have options though.

Shifting the t-case takes some getting used to with an auto. It's very different than with a manual trans. A couple more trips and I'll have it down. Need to be moving VERY slow at idle in neutral then shift slow. Shutting the engine off while rolling also works, but then I lose the power assist on the brakes.

I have just about all I need to do done for now. Soon as I get the tire carrier done, CB installed, carb fixed and brakes working better then I will just drive it until next winter when I'll add a cage, front bumper, winch, etc.

It has been a while since my last post. My cousin just moved to China for 6 months and would like to read up on my progress so here goes :)

I have been out several times now and am more comfortable with the rig now. I built a 2 x 4 x 1/4" wall rear bumper and added square tube for a tire carrier. Works great. I didn't take any build pics. Got burned out on posting. I take some pics later.

My carb was not working well at all. I replaced with with a rebuilt quadrajet and it runs awesome now.

I have a 1.5" drop pitman arm. It is 5.5" long center to center. I set my steering stops where the birfs maxed out. When I turn my steering wheel all the way to the steering stops I can turn the steering wheel another 1/4 turn or so. That puts a lot of pressure on the steering rod ends. I worry I am going to break something. So I am hunting for a shorter pitman arm.

The brakes are still an issue. I upgraded to a 9" dual diaphragm brake booster. It stops way better than before, but I can't lock up the tires on dry pavement (low vacuum from performance cam). I have the proportioning valve dialed all the way and the back still locks up before the front. I can live with it for now. I did lots of research and there might be some better calipers than the V6 4Runners and Monte Carlos. I don't have the info with me right now, but there is a different front caliper with slightly larger pistons (read about them in the truck forum) and you can use '85 Trans Am rear calipers in back (not positive on all the years). They are 1 7/8" pistons. Better than 2.5" Monte Carlo and are set up with a cable operated parking brake. This part can be removed.

Mounted a CB between the front seats and a powered speaker on the roll bar. Now I can actually hear the CB :) I am setting up a stereo also. Later on I will fab up some better mounts for them instead of plywood and 2x2's. It's ugly, but it works for now. I plan on a Metal Tek family cage and will mount the radios between the spreaders.

One think I don't like is how far down the tcase sits. I put it up as high as I could without cutting into the gas tank cavity. It is 2" lower than stock. Nothing I can do about it except a body lift or a different gas tank. I thought about adding a fuel cell in back, but then I lose the ability of a rear seat. I want a rear seat so it's not an option.

I am getting ready to buy lift springs. I have 5" shackles now and 33" tires. They clear with all the body cutting I did. I plan on 35" to 37" tires later on. From the experience I gained I think I can clear 35s with a 2.5" lift up front. To even out the rig with all my trail gear I need 4" in back. Trying to find the right set of rear 60 series springs for the back and 2.5" front 40 springs that won't give me vertical shackles has been a PITA. If my fronts weren't flipped I could use the longer set that CCOT or SOR sells (don't remember which). Can't flip them though because the long side is longer. That would push my axle too far forward. Contacted Alcan and those are too pricey.

That is where I am now. Have to finish installing the radio and fabbing some speaker boxes before a snow run on Saturday.

Been researching options for a long time to get some lift without going too high. I don't want a SO.

I determined that I need 2.5" up front and 4" in the rear (because of the extra weight of gear, spare tire carrier, etc.). Makes it hard to figure out exactly because I have the flipped 40 fronts and flipped 60 rears.

Anyway, after reading everything I could find and talking to MAF and CruiserOutfitters I decided on the OME Dakkar CS001F's in front and CS004RA's for the rear based on the advice of MAF.

Shipping was $180, ouch.

Well, Man-a-free was wrong.

I called and explained what I was needing. Up front I wanted a 2 1/2" lift. The sales person said the Dakar CS001F's would give me 2.5" even though the web site says 1.5". I received the springs last Monday. They told me last Tuesday when I called to tell them these looked too flat to get 2.5" that I could return them (my cost for shipping, of course). I put them on last Saturday and guess what. 1.5". I need different front springs and don't want to pay an additional $180 round trip, but I'm stuck.

Called MAF again today. The call didn't go well. The tech went so far as to say it's my fault they don't work. I must already have aftermarket lift springs and I just don't know it, etc. Told him my front springs are nearly flat and very much stock and he said, no they should be beyond flat at their age so it's my fault. He would be happy to sell me longer shackles or a reversal kit. They are happy to take the springs back, but I'm SOL on freight, etc. Too bad. He would be happy to sell me Safari springs, but said they would be too stiff for me and again I'm SOL on freight, too bad.

MAF will not get any of my business ever again. Back to the drawing board.

Maybe you should talk to Tor. He's an ARB/OME dealer. Perhaps you can work out some kind of deal with him or perhaps he can work as an intermediary to find someone that wants your springs.

Why did you have springs shipped from CA anyway, when ARB and Tor are local? There's no way that Tor could not have beat whatever price "Man-It-Ain't-Free" quoted you, especially when you add in shipping. :bang:

I know that now, didn't know that before I ordered.

I need to decide what to do next before I think about selling the springs. If I do decide on different springs I sure won't return these. It would be a losing proposition.

So when is your rig going to be trail ready?

Talk to Tor and see if he can't help.

My truck is just about done. I'm waiting on one fitting for my power steering pressure hose before I fire it up.

Great build mate. Shame about the headaches.

Great to hear you're on the road now.

Wanted to document some more things I have done.

First is my tire carrier. I didn't take pics while building and it's dirty now. Oh well, you can tell how I made it.

Here is from the back

You may have read a previous post about the issues I had with OME springs I bought from Man-a-fre. I fabbed new fixed mounts up front to resolve the lack of lift from the springs. I gained just about 3", but I'm sure it will settle out a bit. In the rear I used 4" OME rear 60 springs. The actual lift was more like 3".

I still have some work to go. The rear shocks still fit. Both drive shafts are fine. The brake lines are fine as I made them long to begin with because I new I was going to get a lift. In front the shocks are 1/2" too short. I previously installed Ford towers and bolted them on because I figured I may have to move them. Next weekend I'll take them off, weld up the holes and redrill 1" higher to lower the tower an inch. I also need to put my shims back in. I thought I might be able to get away without them, but I am at 0*. I have some 4* shims I will put back on Saturday.

I am worried about shackle inversion front and rear. I'll have to keep an eye on them. I do plan to fab new shackles so I might make some boomerang shackles. We'll see.

Here is a before shot I took a while back.

Ane here are some quick shots of the lift.

In case anyone is wondering, no I can't get out of the garage. At least with the soft top on. I am going to lower it and measure to the top of the roll bar to see if I can get out of the garage. If not them I may air down, or at worst unbolt the roll bar and drop the windshield. :meh:

Steve, first chance I have had to read your full build thread, great job, looking forward to seeing it if your able to make the Summer meet at Ryan's house? Makes me rethink my approach to replacing my engine in the 40, but I had already found a great 2f engine that is just sitting there waiting to replace the F155 i have with the cracked head. Great job on your build and some well thought out items that I will benefit from in the future......

I can hardly wait to hear how things go this Saturday at Walker Valley during the "Steve's Revenge" run. I wish that I could join you guys, but I really need to complete the work on my truck. :D

Have fun.
