Builds Going to meet my new 80

Started installing new speakers today. It’s hard to believe how horrible the stock speakers were in the 80 series. Even when they were new, they couldn’t have been great. 20 years later, they’re completely rotted away. You can see where the cone has rotted and separated in this picture.

After reading a few threads, and having a desire to maintain the stock speaker grilles, I went with these pioneer speakers.

Total cost was about 60 dollars on Amazon for two sets (4 speakers). Here’s a link.

Pioneer TS-G1645R 2-Way 6-1/2" 500 Watt Car Audio Coaxial Speaker (2 Pairs) 6.5" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P9M5Z54/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xuc0AbQK9QE0T

I only had time to mount the two front speakers today, but the install was pretty straight forward. Take off the door panels and remove the old factory speakers and then pop in the new speakers. You have to bend the tabs with the yellow arrows about 45 degrees, and the speaker fits right in place. You can use the existing screw hole at 12 o’clock, but one or two other screws will need to be tapped in, as the factory mounts don’t align. But that’s simple. I’ve seen that some people have made shims, but I didn’t have to. The window clears the speaker with no issues and the door card goes right back in place without any bulging. Here’s the new speaker mounted in the front doors.

These were the only self tapping screws I had on hand. The head of the screws are a little large, but Shouldn’t interfere with the sound quality at all. I went with just two screws because I’m a minimalist and they felt very secure.

I haven’t really tested sound quality yet, because I’m sure the factory amp is blown. For now, I’m more concerned about fit and finish. Once everything is put together, I’ll do a more in depth review of the setup.

The carpet from stockinteriors.com came today. Very quick shipping. I ordered this late Sunday night and today is Friday. I’m impressed. It appears to be ACC carpet, which many of us are familiar with. I ordered a hot knife yesterday, so I’ll need to wait until that arrives before I install, but I just want to mention a few of my first impressions.

I upgraded to the ultra plush pile with mass backing. The carpet definitely feels heavier, sturdier, and in my opinion, better quality than the OEM carpet. Price came to $571 plus about $60 for shipping. Here’s a photo of the pile compared to OEM and the mass backing.

First, I went with the Medium gray color. It’s much lighter than the OEM carpet. In retrospect, I probably should have ordered a darker shade. However, the kit includes the tailgate and wheel wells, so their shouldn’t be any mismatch with the exception of the lower door panels. I may even prefer the lighter color in the end anyway. For me, I’m not concerned about the shade difference. Here’s a picture of the new carpet over the original:

Another thing to mention is that they used black thread to surge the finished sides. I would prefer matching thread I think. However, I think the only place you will see this is along the wheel wells in the cargo area. You can notice that in this photo.

Overall, I have a very favorable initial impression of this carpet set. I think anyone else that orders the same set and upgrades to the ultra plush pile and mass backing, will be very happy with the product they receive.

Stay tuned for installation pictures...

Made some headway on the carpet install today. Because I upgraded the carpet to the ultra plush pike with the mass backing, it turned out to be a little bigger job than I thought.

The new carpet is at least 4 to 5 times heavier than the stock carpet, and the mass backing doesn’t crumple well, so it’s tough to stuff it in place. It’s also not easy to cut. It does seem very durable though. Definitely an upgrade over the stock carpet.

I used a heavy duty exacto knife, along with some new heavy duty scissors. They worked well for most of the job, but a hot knife would have saved me a few bandaids for sure. I’m not finished yet, I still have to trim the sides and staple the plastic tracks in. All in all, I’m very happy with the product, the look, and the feel. Here are some pics of the progress so far.

I’m still waiting on on the new leather for the seats, but at least I’m ready for them now. Anyone else order from a Land Cruiser Heaven? How long did it take to receive the covers?

Got around to finishing up the headliner. I skinned the original felt off the old headliner and rewrapped it with marine vinyl. I also skinned and rewrapped all the pillar trim covers in vinyl as well. It turned out very nice. Thanks to @CenTXFJ60 for helping me out.

Looks awesome Ryan!!!

Awesome job! I bought a 95 last year in So Cal and have been rehabbing and doing maintenance. Your truck looks great! The little spring you found looks to be the spring behind the shift knob button. The bumper looks nice. I'm still debating what to do about a front bumper. Here are a couple of pics. We've replaced the springs with OME stock height with 10mm insulators.

Thanks @vegasfj40 your 80 looks great. You’re right about that spring. I realized where it came from not too long after posting about it. I had so much gutted on the interior, it was hard to remember where everything came from. I always end up with a few extra nuts and bolts no matter what project I’m working on Lol.

R,

You got the last one of that model. I'll look at making another set of 80 bumpers in about 12 months..

Thank you for the order and enjoy.

J

Glad I got in when I did. I’m always late to the party. I can’t wait to see what you design next. 12 months gives me some time to start saving! Haha

The rear will be a higher clearance similar to the one off I started today.

Cool. I'll bet the interior smells like a new car.

It certainly smells much better than it did. I think when the new leather comes, it’ll make a world of difference.

White Knuckle sliders will arrive next week. I’m looking forward to mounting those up.
