Started installing new speakers today. It’s hard to believe how horrible the stock speakers were in the 80 series. Even when they were new, they couldn’t have been great. 20 years later, they’re completely rotted away. You can see where the cone has rotted and separated in this picture.
After reading a few threads, and having a desire to maintain the stock speaker grilles, I went with these pioneer speakers.
Total cost was about 60 dollars on Amazon for two sets (4 speakers). Here’s a link.
Pioneer TS-G1645R 2-Way 6-1/2" 500 Watt Car Audio Coaxial Speaker (2 Pairs) 6.5" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P9M5Z54/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xuc0AbQK9QE0T
I only had time to mount the two front speakers today, but the install was pretty straight forward. Take off the door panels and remove the old factory speakers and then pop in the new speakers. You have to bend the tabs with the yellow arrows about 45 degrees, and the speaker fits right in place. You can use the existing screw hole at 12 o’clock, but one or two other screws will need to be tapped in, as the factory mounts don’t align. But that’s simple. I’ve seen that some people have made shims, but I didn’t have to. The window clears the speaker with no issues and the door card goes right back in place without any bulging. Here’s the new speaker mounted in the front doors.
These were the only self tapping screws I had on hand. The head of the screws are a little large, but Shouldn’t interfere with the sound quality at all. I went with just two screws because I’m a minimalist and they felt very secure.
I haven’t really tested sound quality yet, because I’m sure the factory amp is blown. For now, I’m more concerned about fit and finish. Once everything is put together, I’ll do a more in depth review of the setup.
