i ordered a tach from Amazon. Will wire it up this weekend and see what the true RMP is rather than going by noise. What rpm do you cruise at?
My Harley cruises around 3000 rpm but it's nowhere near as loud as what I'm hearing from the fj40. Maybe I need to put my motorcycle helmet on to dampen the noise...

define loud?

it was wound pretty tight even though it was in 4th.

I was wound tight at 55mph with stock 4:11 gears, 15” rims and “short tires”. The first mods I laid hands on were a clone carb, a desmog, 3:70 gears, taller tires and a Marks header. Still no delusions of grandeur with regard to the Bonneville salt flats but, I’ve outrun an Amish buggy and I can keep up in the slow lane during white knuckled forays on the US interstate system.

I even shed a few hundred pounds of steel body in favor of a full aluminum tub. With good fuel and a headwind I bounce off of 70mph when I’m feeling the spirit but, I’ve come to realize that despite my well laid plans, it’s still a cinder block on wheels.

With 31” tires, around 2900-3000 rpm. That’s about 65 mph. Now I am on 33” tires and still getting used to it, but at 65 it would be 2700 rpm now. I wear earplugs for long drives.

But I wouldn't expect it to affect the speed/rpm...
But it does. The F engine doesn't have a lot of spare horsepower and there's a fair amount of drag running the front diff and axles and wheels if your hubs are still locked. I sure can feel the difference between 2H and 4H if I try to get some speed up...

Unless they regeared it in Colombia before sending it (unlikely), you'll spin 3000 rpm in 4th gear with the 4.11 gears (your rig came originally with a 3 speed, but the final drive in both is the same- 1:1). 3000 RPM for an F is the sound of a tractor engine doing what it doesn't want to do: spin fast.

I don't think in 4LO you could even get to 50 mph without throwing a rod. You also most likely have the H41 4 speed. This has a much lower 1st gear than the American H42. 1st is really a granny low, same as the H55. With 4:11 gears you'll almost never use first except on a hill. What you have is a 3 speed with a granny 1st.

If you can drive 45-50 mph comfortably in 4th gear then I think yours is set up exactly as it ought to be.

Any suggestions on tach?

Cheapo generic Sunpro tach, mounted with provided clamp on to my steering column:

With my 3.70 diffs and 33" tires, I am pulling a hair less than 2,500 rpm to go 65 mph.
