If you search fuel tank or gas tank you get a few over 100 hits but not one thread that I could find on changing a 14.8 gal, 1st gen 4Runner (Deluxe version tank) to a 17.2 gal tank (SR5 version).

It appears that there is only one part number for the fuel pump but maybe there are other issues (e.g. dip pipe, brackets, etc.)?

I know it's only a couple of gallons but I may decide to change my fuel tank anyway and, if so, I might as well install the larger one if it's plug 'n play.

Has anyone tried this swap and know what's involved?

I think you already know more about this than most of us. I for one never paid attention to the fact that first gen 4 Runners had a 14.8 AND 17.2 gal. tank. I'm curious as to what triggers having one tank or the other??? Carb. or EFI, 4 cyl. or V6??? SR-5 is just a USA trim level, so it doesn't seem that would get you a bigger tank??? If you know which wrecking yard 4 Runners have a bigger tank, please enlighten us!!!

Having owned both, I'm almost positive it's SR5 versus Deluxe. It was more than trim level. The early Deluxe 4Runners came into port without a back seat. The bench rears were installed at the port in order to get around the current Japanese car quota. Without a rear seat they were considered trucks.

Also, Deluxe 4Runners came without tachs or oil pressure gauges, the SR5's had both.

BTDT. I have a deluxe truck. I bolted in the larger SR5 gas tank. No problem as long as you use the matching skid plate.

Fuel pump is the same.
Fuel pump bracket is not the same (longer).
Gauge sender is not the same (longer).
