The dealer can get the smaller 2F freeze plug (30mm?), but not the 50mm plug I need. I bought a 50mm plug like that shown in this post (F engine freeze plugs) from NAPA.

I could not pound it into the block - grossly too big/tight. So, I re-used my original freeze plug with FIP (after removing a defective block heater I installed years ago), and of course, now it weeps.

So, are there any DECENT/accurate/fitting 50mm freeze plugs, or shall I get the rubber kind (which I'm not wild about)? I don't know what SOR has (OEM?), but I sure won't pay the shipping on a $2 part, the way they do their math.

Thanks - Steve

I think I have a handful of stock plugs, Steve, but I'll have to dig for them. I'll get back to you after I've had a chance to search.

Now that may be something for Rog on the Unobtaineum thread........................maybe someone could make them

See pix - this is the problem. The OEM Toyota plug is .024" smaller OD than either of the US-sourced replacement plugs.

Whichever route you go, be aware that You'll need to clean the heck out of the hole to get a good seal.

The hole will rust on the sealing surface when the block heater is in the whole. To avoid this problem, I replaced my OE dealer installed block heater with another one when it failed a few years back. I figured since it had lasted since 1969, the new one would last longer than the motor will (without being rebuilt at least). If it fails again in 30+ years, I'll deal with it again. The other variable was, I was repairing it in the mall parking lot, and $25 gave me a cleaner and faster option to get it back on the road... :D

My '73 F engine has "Welch" plugs (domed discs, no flange) and were still available from Toyota earlier this year. Did yours dealer say he ran the part no. And was NLA, or that they just weren't available?

Well, my parts guy (who is very good - a veteran) emailed Toyota and the larger (of the 3) '78 freeze plug came back NLA. I didn't worry about it at the time, as I figured a plug from NAPA would fit.

A generous fellow MUDder is sending me the correct plug - NOS Toyota.
