The next variant was the R series of transmissions. They have been used in many different applications including Turbo 4 cyl trucks, V6 (3.0 and 3.4) trucks and 4Runners, Supras (some behind 600+ HP motors), and the clincher for me, the Hino diesel trucks. The base for the R series trans is the same throughout the spectrum with the main variances being with the gear sets and shafts (both main and counter).

IIRC, the R-series tranny is also used as the Cruiser tranny since the early '90's?

Mr T thinks it's good enough to use behind a 1FZ. Oughta be OK behind the mighty 2F.

pretty sweet, is that something that yall are considering selling to the general public? or a made as you order, or a i work with a bad ass and yall cant have one kinda thing?

Don't know yet. This is something I wanted for my rig and Marlin likes a challenge so we built it. If there is enough interest in it I'm sure it could be added to our line ups.

Yeah I believe the 70 series with a diesel had what was called the R151F (not exactly the same as the turbo 4 cyl. model) and it had a tailhousing to bolt up to a split case.

I thought the 70's and manual 80's trucks had both the R150 and R151 depending on the engine / year combo....

So the main advantage to using this transmission is that the gear ratios are closer together? This swap is wicked cool. What is the advantage of this setup over a H55>Toybox>splitcase setup?

I would guess in his case cost, as he didn't have to shell out the scratch for a 55. I love jobs with perks!

I know this will be a SWAG, but is there any chance that this would be cheaper than swapping in an H55 for the general public? We would need two adapters and some machining on the input + cost of transmission? I would love to throw a 5 speed in my 40, but will not pay the price of an H55.

What is the overall length from bellhousing to the back suface of the toybox?

The R Series was not used in the states until '86/'87 in the turbo 4 cyl trucks and not until '88 in the V6 trucks.

The H55F and NV4500 in my opinion drive the best behind a turbo diesel in factory applications. Those motors have a broader power band and the turbo can pull back up from a bit of lag picking up the slack from the jump in gear ratios. The R150F I feel is better suited to a motor with a tighter power band like the 2F. Mine doesn't start to get happy until about 2500 and drops off around 3750.

Ok, makes more sense now. Very, very cool swap:cheers:

By 70's and 80's trucks I meant FJ/BJ70 and FZJ/HZJ80:p

The R150 gear ratios are very similar to the H42, but with the added OD gear. So it would drive and shift like stock, but with the quicker/smoother shifts of the lighter tranny.

AFAIK, there is no H56 gearbox that uses the H42 ratios, plus the OD gear. In the H series boxes, it's either close ratio H42 and no OD or broad ratio H55 plus OD.

So do I wait on rebuilding my h42 and look for a r150. I am very interested and would be willing to help prototype another for my cruiser ;)

Freds40....
So your thread has me drooling.....I just made my first post in the forum and have gotten more ideas on here then I know what to do with, your transmission set up is super creative, as is the 14 bolt rear, I'm curious as to why you stuck with the 2F.....here's my thoughts with mine https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/382586-new-guy.html , did you stick with the 2F due to complications from California emissions?...from your build ability it would seem to be below your pay grade to circumvent..Awesome rig and much respect on the build.....you've got me thinking i should SOA and build mine bigger!!!!!

so awesome that we can find a R150F for $500 in most junkyards all over the country that could bolt up to a 2f.

beats the hell out of $2,200 for a H55F.

Very clever. I expect nothing less. The 2F is still a turd.

Yes but now the turd has been officially polished. Or at lease the bowl surrounding the turd. :D

Really I like the idea of a v8 but I really like the idea of running the Toy parts just to see if it can be done. Pretty much any v8 swap would be easier on CA emissions than the spaghetti mess under the hood of a 60 but this was a fun project for Marlin and I and now we get to say it can be done.

That was my thought. These trans' are a dime a dozen. They do take more to get into a 60 than an H55F but my feeling is the end result is well worth it.

actually can be surprising but those are the trannys in any HZJ105 down here .. along with many other applications ..

and yes .. I love sleep in the back and the cargo space in Tencha ..

Nice job! It just hooked up and pulled you up.
