Chris,

Keep us updated. If these guys make a template then all of us could benefit. I for one would order a kit today if it was as good as OEM. The original was cut and sewn and not molded Believe.

dirtylittlesecret or chris777, any updates on carpet choices, installation, issues since?

Thanks!

Here's the linkn to Chris' carpet thread and I posted my impressions there as well ( I also bought through Chester and Herrod):

Here is the only pic of mine I could find on 'mud (Post 16):

I think Chris pretty much summed it up - good, not great, but there doesn't seem to be anything better. Still don't know how well it will hold up or resist fading. But it clearly is not as durable as OEM. That being said - no regrets about the purchase.

I went and got my own marine carpet (black) and some really nice padding with the aluminum backing. Did the whole thing for $165. The marine is nice even if you are not doing a lot of creek crossings. If you are like me and have a DR.Pepper while you are wheeling sometimes it spills. With the marine stuff it stays on top and never sinks through. It has a rubberized backing that won't leak.

I took photos and posted them up. They should be in that thread. I took and posted lots of good photos, as I am a professional commercial photographer.

As far as buying bulk marine carpet, I would guess that if you are going to go that route, you could not be very particular about the fit, because to get the carpet to fit right, it has to have a lot of cuts and a lot of seams made at angles that I think are very difficult for an amateur to do. If you buy bulk, flat carpet, don't think that all you have to do is cut the shapes, sizes and holes. Sometimes the carpet needs help to mold to abrupt angles. And that can only be done by either molding the carpet, or cutting it and re-sewing it at an angle so that it forms a change in direction (from horizontal to vertical). Molded carpet would be ideal, but some molded carpet is actually not as good as the aforementioned "cut and sewn" carpet. Why? Because the molding process can be poorly done, and can cause abnormal stretching.

There are quality aftermarket molded carpet makers out there, but they don't want to bother with the small number of old Land Cruiser owners. So we are stuck with those who do.

I will say this about Chestor and Herrod. They are good people who care about your happiness, and if you are not happy they will send out something else.

It's October 2017 and I just installed a cargo area carpet kit in a 1988 FJ62 that was about $130 from OC Auto Carpet. Auto Replacement Carpets | Car and Truck Interior Carpet. Pretty happy with the quality for the price and the color match is pretty good as well. The tailgate piece however does not have a finished edge. It'a just a piece of carpet cut to fit the panel. I'm going to have an upholstery shop sew a vinyl border on it so I can wrap it around the original board and staple or glue it for a more finished OEM look.

Good news here. I contacted OC carpet and told them they needed to finish the tailgate carpet with a vinyl edge that can be wrapped around the board and stapled. Mike at OC listened and they will be starting production of this piece within a few days. This makes the whole cargo area carpet deal a little sweeter. Plus they're sending me out a new carpet piece for the rear at no charge ! BRAVO!
