Did you let him know that he can longer be your "buddy" once the Cruiser is gone? He'll be demoted to "acquaintance".

Now I'm curious about the motor being replaced at 80k...not that with 165k on the clock it would be worrisome. Just interested in the story.

I can't tell you how bad I wanted to go look at this truck so I could get rid of the wife's GX. Then she reminded me how much better the GX pulls the trailer.

If anyone needs an universal winch mounting plate from harbor freight, I got a brand new one that was never used. Yours for $30!

How lethargic are the non 5spd non vvti 100s? (IIRC an 01 has neither) Are they significantly better than an 80? I’ve been thinking about picking up a daily driver, though I’m not really sure I want another land cruiser.

Despite the 35hp difference there isn't a huge difference in the VVTI and non VVTI V8's however there is a significant difference between the V8 and the 80 series straight 6 motors. The V8 is much better suited as a daily driver.

I've never driven one with the newer VVTi motor and 5 spd transmission so I don't have good perspective on that. I went from an '87 FJ60 to my '99 UZJ. So it was a world of difference to me. If you keep it as a daily and keep the stock tire size, I imagine it will be a noticeable improvement over the 80-series. I have slightly oversized tires, stock gearing and an extra few hundred pounds of sliders, bumper and roof rack. It's a little lethargic but it still gets the job done. Towing a trailer weighing more than 1,000 lbs up hills is a little embarrassing though.

although I’m not really sure I want another land cruiser.

Did I just hear you say that? A thousand lashes for you, young man :slap:

My GF has a 2000 Hundy and I love the way it pulls, even with the 4sp tranny same as our 80s. That 343F transmission tends to annoy you a lot less when it's backed up by a decent power plant. I'm noticing the same thing with the turboed engine, it just behaves better. That 4.7 has a nice torque curve and pulls a stock Hundy with authority, I must say. Oh, it's MUCH quieter than our 80s:bang:

I can barely keep one cruiser on the road, much less two!

Objectively I think I might be better off with a 100 on 33s at this point, but I'm pretty invested in the 80 platform.
