Have you tried falken wildpeaks?
I did run a set and got close to 50k out of them. Only major issue I had were punctures. Maybe just a freak thing or combination of jobs we had at the time but I started carrying a compressor and a tire patch kit when I had them. They were good at picking up nails and sharp objects.
Had the same issue with Goodyear Silent Armors but gave up and retired those early. Same with the Duratracs but after two sidewall slices they were all replaced. The slices were just on mountain ground/ logging trails. Nothing crazy by any means.

I love the Good Year Duratacs, I have, in the snow and ice and work well off road too. My second set. Up here in Tahoe the CHPatrol and NHPatrol run them un-studded as well. They wear great...my only complaint is that after about 30,000 miles they start to get noisy. The first 25k they were relatively silent for how aggressive they are. At 35,000 miles they are still at 12/32 with regular rotation but getting noisy.

good so far, thanks to all of you for your patience on my questions. and now out of left field...someone recommended the Nitto EXO grappler.

So my short list currently...
Nitto Ridge Grapplers (main concern...are they going to be good in rain or snow and ice going over mountain passes?)
KO2s (main concern same as above along with balancing issues)
(still learning about the Cooper AT3 and the Nitto EXO's)
*removed TOYO AT2s from my list (even though I guess technically there are still on THIS list)

and then the FX wheels in gunmetal ...one option is to buy the tires and try them on my stock wheels with spidertrax spacers first (just a dumb thought, since its double the mounting and balancing cost, but cheaper initial cost)

Am i the only one thats loves and will only run Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs? I had bfg years ago on a cherokee and they were ok. After switching to the goodyears on my old 96 4runner i have never used any other tire on any suv. I love them.

I should probably at least take another look at the duratracs too… I had a friend that had them...he liked them but said they got noisy. But that's just one persons experience

I had C-rated Duratracs on my Tacoma for about 30k. They were great in the snow and rain, but they were so soft they felt like marshmallows on the road and I never felt comfortable taking them on anything rougher than a fire road. I don’t think I’ll ever run them again for that reason. Mine didn’t get overly noisy after 30k+ on them.

Well... yesterday while traveling I scrolled through my Facebook feed and saw the the TRD pro wheels were on sale for one day at 40% off. I was actually resolved to live with the plasticoated stock wheels and spacers. But I just couldn’t pass this one up so I acted quickly and grabbed a set of the matte grey wheels. It will be a few days to get here, but pretty excited to see how they will look on the white gx. Anyone happen to have a picture of the grey TRD pro wheels on a white gx?

Is Matte Gray the same as Gunmetal? ScatAdams has a white GX470 with TRD Pros in Gunmetal. See his web site 2005 Lexus GX470 | Outworld

And what are the specs on your TRD Pro wheels like width and offset? I always get confused if they are 7" wide or 7.5" wide.

7x17 I think with 4 mm offset. Hopefully it’s the right specs

Yep. They are 17x7 +4 offset

Scat has them on his white GX

I read somewhere that a rule of thumb for off-roading is to get wheels that are 2” to 3” narrower than the tire.

I think it makes a difference when you lower the tire pressure for off-roading.

285/70R17s are typically 11.5” wide. So, a wheel that’s 8.5 or 9 wide is in the rule of thumb guidelines.

Moreover, the tire mfgs tell you their recommended range and I believe it’s 7.5” to 9” wide rim. And these 285 tires are usually tested with 8.5” wide wheels...from what I’ve read.

Anyways, many others run the trd pros 17x7 with the 285/70R17 tires and I haven’t heard any complaints or issues.

I guess you get the added benefit of being able to use skinny tall tires aka pizza cutters on those wheels. Sometimes I wish I could change to 255/80R17 tires which are a true 33” tire (33.1” tall by 10” wide)

cool man! you gotta post pics when you get them on...

also, did you ever solve your rubbing issues? i seem to remember that when you went to 285's you had a fair amount of rubbing.

I run 315/70R17 on my TRD Pro Rims. The tires specs at 12.4 inches nominal at the treads. My installer (Mudrak) says he puts the same tire on 6" wide rims, and claims better for airing down.

I have had no problems, even when aired down to 15 psi. But I don't heavy duty rock-crawl.

narrow tires are the poor man's beadlock. It causes artificial bulge and VERY tight mounting required to set the bead. Most shops won't do the mounting so it is hard to get someone to do the work.

You mean narrow rims?

Yeah I know about those issues. Will go less wide on next set. But at 5k miles per year in my GX it will be awhile.

I finally had the wheels swapped out last night and they look great. The wheels themselves in gunmetal look great. (I will post a decent picture as soon as it stops raining). I am both happy and at the same time, bummed a little. When I had the old wheels on, the tires just sat out a little wider and had a more of an “aggressive look”. When we installed the TRDs, we tried using the 1.25” SpyderTrax spacers but the tires hit/rubbed on all kinds of spots when testing lock to lock (corner of fender, liner) and they stuck out pretty far. I would probably have to trim fenders and liners and body mount.
So we pulled the wheels and took off the spacers. Now the tires are farther in than what I had before and my first impression is that it doesn’t look as good. But it does not rub so that is a huge plus. And they still look really good, just a touch off what I expected though. I’m hoping I am just overthinking things and it will grow on me. I’m wondering if I bought the wrong offset TRD pro wheels or if I should look for a .75” wheel spacer? Or maybe just start trimming everything? I will try to post a pic of before and after as soon as I can.

Is "THAT" who ScatAdams is? I was JUST looking at that website yesterday, due to watching a cool YT video. Funny, small world I guess.

Sorry, now back to the FX Pro vs TRD Pro discussion.
