I have not heard of DEI either. But, I like the look of that product. I will try some as well. Under my hood I did a silver lined wool product I believe. I have been really happy with it! It made a huge difference on the noise. I did not notice any bad towards keeping heat in... I did a similar wool product on the firewall as well. Except that it was not a sticky back product. So I had to put it behind all the brake lines, bolts, etc. to keep it on. I could do some looking to see what I used it you guys wanted me to. Then on the inside, another wool product. lol

This is what I put under the carpet and up the firewall. This made the most difference I believe. https://www.amazon.com/Design-Engineering-050110-Absorption-Insulation/dp/B005Q583BC/?tag=ihco-20

Hope that helps.

I was not familiar with DEI.
Do you think we get a lot of noise in the cab through the hood?
Do you think the engine/engine bay would be significantly hotter with the hood insulated?

Also good questions for @fjdiesel . I’m sure others can chime in too!

It was wild to me to learn that the vents near the windshield are engine bay intakes. I’ve wanted to do some kind of smoke test at different speeds since I learned this.
I can confirm that smoke comes out of those vents when moving down the highway and when stopped on the side of the highway. Whoever told you that they suck air in must have a different setup than me. Don’t ask me how I know.

What I do know about engine heat is that my cruiser ran significantly cooler at night vs day with the same ambient temperature. I imagine that the sun beating down on the hood produces more heat in the engine compartment. I’ll test and report back. I don’t know that I will notice a reduction in sound from adding hood insulation.

Thanks for the lead! I hadn’t come across this yet and I was looking for something to put between the carpet and the floor. I still plan to put Dynamat and Dynaliner down underneath this. I want to be cold next summer! If this doesn’t work then I am getting a full a/c suit with noise canceling helmet. That would keep me cold and block out the noise.

Is this pipe heat shield what you were recommending earlier this year, DJ? It seems pricy. I might take the dangerous route and wrap my pipe with rust promoting wrap.

Yep. Stuff works wonders. I have it wrapped on top of my cats and muffler and it helps a ton.

I have a cheap-Chinese-from-Amazon (no offense DJ) turbo blanket and my Oreilly’s parts store stocks titanium exhaust wrap, not that expensive but I don’t know how they compare either.

Interesting logic, not sure I agree but I know I don’t know what I don’t know, you know?
I get stuck on the fact that the engine is constant producing 200* to 1200* heat, and that there would be tremendous heat transfer through the hood with outside air moving over it.

The most amount of noise I get is through the hardtop and firewall. I'm mostly just wind noise now with my engine and exhaust, and it's a pain to kill. Full carpet helps an insane amount as well.

I’m going to be thankful if I can ever get it to ‘just’ wind noise. I’m mostly concerned about this rattley nasty 6bt I put in here. Maybe I’ll wrap the fuel pump.
Maybe I’ll put a headliner on the Christmas list. It is an echo chamber for sure. Hadn’t thought about carpet.

You can wrap the 6bt with an LS…

I don’t know that it is possible to get rid of the wind noise in the 40 series. I’d love to go for a ride in an FJ45 LV. They have a fixed windshield frame much like the other wagons and I wonder if that would reduce wind noise.

I know this question is from a while back, but my answer right now is that I think the wind noise is just transferred through the glass, and top maybe. I got my door seals pretty tight, and all my windshield gasketing has been tight from the beginning. I can’t see a fixed windshield being less porous than what I have, and I think yours would be the same, tight.

In other progress;
Finally got it out to drive it a bit over Christmas, and was happy with the newly redone door seals, although the db meter phone app registered nearly identical numbers as before, it was a different tone, and seemed a few db quieter to my ear. Lower frequency, less wind noise, less annoying. Still need to sound proof the trans hump, bleh.

I moved the intercooler radiator to under the floor, and installed hot and cold side temp gauges, and a boost gauge, and drilled out the manifold for a properly placed egt sensor. Not pushing too hard I see 150* difference between manifold and 16” past turbo temps. Guessing that will be 300* when pushing things hard.
Seeing mixed results so far on the cold and hot sides of the intercooler, looking forward to pushing a bit and seeing what happens.

Working on the sway bar, what a mess.
After talking to both TK1 racing and Currie Anti rock people, I decided to to go with TK1, as I felt the most confident with them understanding my weights and install limitations. I don’t exactly regret getting this in on the initial build, as it was good for me to experience the body roll, and something would have been a compromise anyway, whether the fuel tank capacity/location, suspension travel, or something…
My compromise now is that I’m cutting and rewelding the arms to work around the shock hoops, as the bar has to go above the frame and the first section of the arm has to drop down. Pretty tough geometry to make work, and I might not get full potential out of the bar, but we’ll see…
I think I have it worked out for the bar to go slightly behind the coilover on compression, and be one enough to still be somewhat effective on extension. Ok, truth be told, my goal on extension is to not let the connecting rod go over center…
Sorry for all the words, here’s pics of initial work.

Your body roll wasn’t good for anyone to experience. I didn’t know that a vehicle could lean over that far and not crash.

I’m excited to see how this TK1 bar works as I may have another build in me and I’ll consider this brand.

I’m pretty convinced that I will always wear ear plugs in any 40 series at highway speeds. I was looking at a Rugged Radio intercom system that also taps into the GMRS radio. That may be in the books for 2027 when we drive to California.

I don’t know where my CG is, but that frame is heavy. The lower links are 2.5 x .5 DOM.
The only time I’ve ever felt insecure with it was after the very last obstacle on Poughkeepsie, at the very top of the hill, and I dropped a tire into a hole in a bad way. Should have had Matt IV get out and spot me in hindsight.

The TK1 came highly recommended from DJ.

I was looking at those intercoms too. There’s a possibility I could get my oldest son to come with me some time but an intercom may be a requirement. I have the Walkers noise cancelling shooters earpro with the radio add on but while cheaper they are not nearly comfortable enough for me to wear all day, and not very clear either. But definitely a cheaper option. The intercom would be good protection for the kids too. I’m measuring 82 to 85 db at highway speeds.

I don’t remember the hole that you are talking about. Was it right before when I hopped in for a quick ride?

I am measuring the same db unless my engine is under load, then it jumps into the mid 90s.

Might be worth getting some of those arms laser cut. I'd be happy to help with design if needed. I'm pretty sure you'll be amazed at the difference that bar will make.

Antirock is really an OEM replacmenent for most stuff. They don't understand custom very well. I really like the TK1 guys; they actually seem to race with those bars.

Thanks. I’ll get something fabbed up and welded, then I’ll have a pattern of what I need. There's some angles involved, in two planes.
