FJ80 axle questions

The full float spindle is too small for a 35 spline shaft. It would be possible in a semi float, but there is not enough demand for it. We will be doing high strength 30 spline shafts soon. We could also do 32 spline full float shafts to offer with the 32 sp arb ant TLC100-488-NG R&P

still good news .. happy to see the Cruiser axles market growing that way ..

Hi Mudders,

Excuse me for sort of highjacking the thread, but for lack of a better place I wanted to address this question with you: what is the suggested lower fnal diff gearing from the stock 4.1 ratio. I live very high up in the mountains (9600 ft - higher than Denver!) and when climbing certain long hills it seem like I need a lower ratio. In fact, when I go over 11500ft the rig practically wont go unless I switch on the low range. I know this is not the case with the JDM 80's with manual transmission (an possibly different diff gearing?)

I know Yukon makes some diff gears for this rig and some people locally have fitten them on their 80's with great results, but was wondering if anyone had gone with another supplier and could shed some light. Thanks!

I would suggest Yukon just for the warranty of nothing else. Search on rock auto. They have some cheap gears. Pulled a third member on an 80 axle today. I was surprised at the pretty noticeable size difference of the front and rear thirds

4.56, 4.88, 5.29 are all popular ring and pinion ratios. John

Hi,

Thanks to "itbrokeagain" and "inkpot" for their replies. I will give the Yukons a look and will post back when I have them installed (may be a while until I get the cash - they are about USD 1,000 installed for both front and rear!). Regards,

Hi again

As I logged in to see my MUD messages I saw an ad for Justdifferentials.com and they have the Nitro ring and pinions. As I saw they have a 2 year warranty, which is 1 year better than the yukons. Anybody have any experience with these? Thanks,

Gears

Be careful what you look for for gears out there. I am biased, but I can personally vouch that Nitro Gear is the ONLY brand that knows there stuff on Landcruisers. The Front 8" reverse gearsets now feature a larger stronger 29 spline pinion, that nobody else offers. Also all of the installation kits have the correct parts, with or without OEM lockers. Landcruiser gears are Nitro's "A" movers, thus many resources are put forth to ensure they are the best quality. Available for purchase from slee or a number of other vendors on 'mud.

Thanks! I will definitely give it some thought, and will PM you for more details. Regards,

Hi,

Today I reached out to Jusfdiffs and Opie was great in helping me figure out the most adequate setup for my rig given the conditions that I am in and it basically boils down to a 4.88 Nitro complete kit. I will be (eventually) ordering it, just have to wait for some cash to come in to take the plunge. Once I have them fitted I will update for everyone - could be an educational experience for any other mudders who live their daily lives around the 10,000FT above sea level, although I'm sure there aren't very many of us! Until then, all the best to all...

Q. I have a stock 80 and planning on a LS swap (L96 6.0L, 6L90 tranny, gm transfer case); will may stock axles be enough for this drivetrain? Do not plan on tires bigger than 35.

For Highway? Hard wheeling? Fire roads? Smokey Burnouts? Going to need a little more information before anyone can give you a decent answer.

I hunt and fish out of my 80. A lot of soft sand and plenty of mud. 50% daily driver use. Right now it does fine on packed/loose sand but have a hard time getting out. Mud is bad for my 80. I can 2 to 3 inch deep mud but anything else will bugg me down bad.

**** yeah! I am so glad someone finally put this kit together. Using the 100 series center section with the beefier ring gear, and pinion, plus these axles is an awesome combo. I can't wait to start making some money again so I can pick the kit up.

I’m quite sure they are made by RCV so they will be better than the one piece Nitro’s I’m currently running.

Can you elaborated on how the 100 third member is an upgrade? Does it drop right in to an 80 rear housing?

The 100 series ring and pinion is a different design from 80. The holes for the bolts do not take up room on the gear mating surface. The 100 pinion is also 32 spline vs 27 or 29 spline for the 80 series. Additionally the 100 series 3rd member accepts the 32 spline axles where the 80 is 30 spline. This is something I have been talking about doing for years, so it is nice to see a company making it happen, so people don't have to get custom axles made.
