My wife has recently been DDing my FJ62 and in the pass couple weeks its started to develop a hard start issues. At first it wasn't happening all the time, but has progressively gotten more and more consistent. Once it does fire up it runs fine, but it's gone from it's typical wuh, wuh, wuh, vroom to wuh, wuh, wuh, wuh, wuh, nothing, try again, wuh, wuh, wuh, wuh, wuh, wuh, vruh vruh vroom. plus or minus a couple of wuhs here and there.

Just some history, FJ62 is sitting at 226k. I got it just before 215k, had it on jack stands for three months and when through every mechanically that I didn't receive receipts for and fix and replace a whole lot then. Plugs and wires were done just before I got it. I deleted the EGR and smog equipment, replaced the fuel filter and pick up screen. All the vacuum lines have been replace with silicon lines, so I'm pretty confident there are no vacuum leaks. I'm pretty sure the PO had the injectors cleaned, I have to look back at receipts. I do run techron through the tank from time to time to help keep them clean. Pulled the cold start infect to clean that and surprisingly, it was almost spotless. Also, recently cleaned the MAF again.

Tried to pulled the IAC valve, but one of the screws started to strip and I figure I'd have a better opportunity to get that off when I pull the intake. I did pull the hose and hit it with some cleaner the best I could. Also, seafoam'd the top end, barely any smoke, but I this previously when I first it.

My first thought was the Fuel pressure regulator, so I replaced the original Denso (no longer available as far as I can tell) with a SMP PR88, no luck. I've got a Fuel pressure dampener waiting to go in. I'm planning on pulling the intake to get to the dampener a little easier and to finally remove the air injector rail. Just have to order new intake gaskets. However, I'm not really holding my breath on the dampener fixing the hard start. So, I figure I'd just go ahead and order a fuel pump.

Looking at Rock Auto I don't see many brands I trust, besides carter. I don't know much about Carter electric fuel pumps, just use their mechanical ones on SBC's, but their electrical ones have different connectors compared to the post style terminals of the OEM ones.

So any suggestions on brands you've used and have had luck with is appreciated.

I would not use an aftermarket pump.
use only OEM supplier part
Aisin
I don't have a part # but the last one I bought, 2 years ago was $115 delivered

Shoot I was working off the premise the OEM pumps were no longer available.

Got the part number Nippondenso or Aisin fuel pump? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/nippondenso-or-aisin-fuel-pump.60946/

Of course it’s in a @Spook50 thread, lol I swear my FJ62 just copies his in its issues.
My understanding (which I didn't realize back in 05) is that the OEM mechanical pumps (carbureted rigs) are Aisin and the in-tank electrical pumps are Denso.

That said, the Denso is still available new from Rockauto and if your bracket is still in good condition it's an easy swap once you have the tank dropped. Not sure if the Aisin pump is still available though; never looked myself.

DUH, Correct Denso not Aisin.
last time I didn't even drop the tank completely, I left all the hoses still attached and dropped the driver side which gave me enough room to remove the pump assembly
you do need to disconnect the 2 lines to the pump in front of the tank.
flare wrenches work best to break the preasure line

Do you know that the cold start injector is actually shooting gasoline through it when activated? I would be sure of that before moving on.

I’ve dropped the tank plenty of times. Replaced the hoses last time I did it. At this point I’m very tempted to just cut the floor, but I’ll probably never bring myself to do that unless I can snag a cut out of a floor to overlap the hole I cut.

Any way to test it? Or just unbolt it and leave the lines and wires connected and just turn the key and check that it’s spraying?

That would be it. If you must reinstall it to test it, you could stuff a rag in the intake to soak up the gas, and pull a coil wire so that the engine won't start, then crank it, and take it apart, the rag should be wet with gasoline. There may be more elegant ways to test it, of course.

I would do a couple things before I went after the fuel pump. In my experience the fuel pumps used for EFI either work or don't work....they don't degrade. So I would put a fuel pressure gage on your fuel rail and measure your fuel pressure.....You should also be able to hear the pump running and just to rule out a relay problem you could jump 12v directly to the pump and see if it starts any differently.

Well I didn't get around to looking into the hard starts this weekend, was stuck working on the wife's new DD, a '03 Tacoma. Finally got my white knuckle offroad rock sliders installed, because I've been tripping over them on the front porch for two months now. Also, replaced the horn contact ring and plunge, no more grinding sounds while turning.

However, the two times I started up the FJ62 to move it around the driveway it started up fine... go figure.

Hoping to get into this weekend.

Finally got around to fixing this. Been busy as of late. Anyways, I had figured it was the Cold Starter Injector switch. Was about to order a new one, but my 1988 FJ62 falls into the weird range where it might have been the old style switch. So last night I went to look at which one I had so I would know if I had to order the wiring connector as well. Well, it turns out the connector had just back off the switch, so I just shoved it back on and wouldn't you know, no more issue.

Apparently my connect is missing the little metal spring to hold it in place so that's the actual problem I to resolve.

Do you have any wreckers nearby that have any 60/62 series Cruisers? That little spring is identical on all square-ish connectors like that so it'd be easy to take a pick, remove the metal spring and pop it into place on your own connector. Done it on a few occasions myself.

My buddy runs barnyard cruisers and mize adventure on youtube. Might be able to snag the spring clip from him
