I have heard about the mod over and over on the forum ..... BUT I honestly have no idea what it really means.

I have a generally bone stock FJ60 ... What does this mod do for me ?? I simple language please !!

Thanks,

Josh

I guess it lets you run in 4L, but only driving the rear drive shaft.

If I want two low, I'll just leave my hubs unlocked! I did it all the time in my 85 PU, when someone boxed me in a parking space. It worked great! :D

I guess it could be use full if one was running poor a mans locker in front.

mentioned above lets you run in low range regardless if the hubs are locked or unlocked. so if your a poor man with a lunch box locker up front (lockright-aussie style) you can make turns with out it binging and popping. also a great free mod if you just need to get up a steep incline or jerk the neighbors fence down with minimal damage...

What this modification does is allows you to shift into low range without having to also shift into 4 wheel drive, thus 2 low.

A detroit is a an auto locker and i would not consider it to be a poor mans locker...

besides if on a trail you dont want to get out and lock the hubs when you need 4wd again. thus 2 low!

yup allows you to go into low range without going into 4wheel drive and allowing you to leave hubs locked without putting power to front end.

its nice when you have a locker up front to be able to turn sharper and what not. I have used the heck out of it in all of my trucks, even on my open front and rear 42. IF you get stuck in 2wd then hopefully you can still power out in 4wd. it has saved me a couple of times.

Thanks for the heads up. I may have to look into this mod for my truck.

ok if ya got a locker i can see where this would be plenty helpfull. however in my 89 fj62. instead of doing all sorts of disconnects ...(although trust me i do see how and why youd want to do this) at least in an auto ..with the stock configuration, if yoru on a trail that is easy 2wd and dealing with steep hills so your not riding the brakes .i discovered .with help of a friend .that if you leave the hubs UNLOCKED...shift it into 4LO .that with the hubs unlocked yes the t case is working but your front wheels arent getting any power ...thus you have 2Lo.granted i wouldnt use this for anty long perioid of times .probally only for steep hills that i dont want to fxxx up my breakes on ....of if i have to do some slow pulling .but it does work .i must say

the problem with what you describe is when you get stuck or need the 4wd again you have to get out and lock both sides in, and while this may not take long sometimes you cant afford to loose the momentum as i have had stuff just "pop up" out of nowhere and had to drop into 4 wheel. or if on a trail ride with others you would be clogging up the trail while everyone waited for you to lock back in.

when out i run pretty much everything in 2 low unless i think or know i will need 4 wheel, so my hubs are always locked and it helps to keep me out of trouble.

granted, i do completly understand the need for it overall. however, im not talking about a full length trail were you need 4wd most if not all the time. im just saying that on most trailes at least here in the southwest .where you can do alot of backroads in 2wd there is at least an alternitive option. mind you its not full proof nor is it wise to but that much strain on the tcase .esspecially when you arent using it .however im just saying its a decent option if your able, if teh roads and terrain calls for it

In a FJ60 with the 2low mod can you shift the transfer case from 2hi into neutral without having to go into 4hi?

In other words; does the shift pattern look like this with the 2low mod:

H2-N-L2
l___l__l
H4-N-L4

or, like this:

H2---L2
l_____l
H4-N-L4

yup you can do a square pattern

Is there a neutral position between the 2hi and 2lo?
Or, can I move the shifter over and down from 2hi into the "normal" neutral?

I would like to be able to put the transfer case into neutral from 2hi without going into another setting.

yes you have a neutral between 2hi and 2lo and you can go up and down from all three positions and left and right ect. basicaly any direction but diagonal.

But trent can your write your new pattern

Wouldn't it just be the same to have the hubs unlocked and put the lever in 4 low?

NO!

if you do that it still puts power to the front drive line, not to mention you have to stop, get out, and re lock the hubs again. that is a complete waste of time and you will irritate others on the trail with you as you cause it to clog up.

The entire point of this mod is so you can quickly and easily go in and out of 2 and 4 wheel in both high and low range without ever having to get out of your vehicle.

That's easy. Up and down for all of them!
