What do you think of these heads and rockers for part of a TBI build... Gunmetalcruz on pirate has a set assemebled that I'm considering buying from him for my anemic TBI.

Roller Rockers:

Those are a great set of heads, you just need to make sure you pair them with a set of pistons (to keep your compression in check, around 9.5:1) so you can run 87 octane. Pair that with a large cam with an LSA of around 112-114 (a roller cam would be very nice if you stay with your TBI block)

If you don't need an EGR for smog, you can get a Weiand single plane manifold and not lose your low end, since your using TBI.

Those crane rollers are very nice but you'll be into them close to $600. You would be better off buying the summit rollers for around $200 Summit SUM-G6910B - Summit Aluminum Roller Rocker Arms - summitracing.com with not much loss in quality.

In my opinion, you would be much better off buying an engine that someone already built & needs the money. I paid $1500 for my stroker that I could not have built for less than $3500. Keep your eyes on craigslist and pirate, there are some great deals out there if you are patient.

alright back from the dead... Let's here your spec's on the TBI motor... :)

Thanks for the resurection!

Here are the specs:

4-bolt main, high nickle block .040 over, .010 on the mains
Scat 9000 crank with scat 6" rods, int.balanced
KB Hypereutectic pistons @ 9.6:1 compression
EQ torker 76cc heads (supposed to flow slightly better than vortecs)
Comp Cams XE 4x4 K12-239 cam (only 111LSA)
Summit 1.5 roller rockers
Edelbrock performer intake with EGR (I need to smog)
All ARP bolts and studs
Ebay ceramic block huggers
50mm (700cfm) bored throttle body with a vacuum referenced fuel pressure regualtor set to 38psi using the stock 61# injectors.
EBL modified ECM from Dynamicefi.com
Airtex External 90psi fuel pump, only $30 from EBAY!
Moates.net wideband meter with the Innovative LC-1 controller

I built the exhaust last weekend from mandrel bends bought off of EBAY. It is 2.5" to 3" into a 3" magnaflow cat and HUGE magnaflow 3" stainless muffler. I wanted it to be quiet since I seem to do alot of road hunting now that I'm over the hill :) it is a quiet exhaust. I could have had an exhaust system built for about what I paid for just the bends. this would have saved me about 8 hours of work, but the mandrel bends flow much better and the routing is perfect.

When I first fired the engine, I had a loud knock coming from the bottom end. it sounded and felt like the crank was hitting the pan (common in strokers). I pulled the pan & saw nothing so I racked my brain, cut open the oil filter looking for bearing material, checked all of the block clearances & finally decided it must be coming from somewhere else and started reassemble it. when I was cleaning the oil pan there was a little lip above the windage tray that had amall marks on that coresponded with the # 4 rod & sure enough that was the problem! Bent the tab down, got it all back together & the knock was gone! I'm glad I didn't start pulling the bearing caps.

I also installed the EBL board into my ECM & it is an awesome computer. The software is very user friendly & it will actually learn while you drive. I still need to install the wideband to make the learning much more rapid and accurate. It is similar in operation to the megasquirt, but seems to be alittle better suited for performance and is tailored to running the GM systems. It can be configured to run cooling fans, nitrous & blowers. Unfortunately it does not yet support a Maf sensor, only speed density.

I still need to install my VSS. I am going to use the rostra magnetic sensor for a cruise control. The guys over on the binders bulletin have had success using them with TBI. you can get them at summit here: Rostra Precision Controls 250-4165 - Rostra Vehicle Speed Sensors - summitracing.com

I also need to wire in an IAT sensor (Intake air temepature) so the EBL can better compensate for changing temps.

I'll update this thread sometime this week with pics of the exhaust.

ok, so I found this one... the guy selling this is on a couple local boards and seems somewhat reputable. w

What cha think? I just emailed him for some more specific info.

383 chevy stroker motor 450 hp!

I saw that over on Pirate, I posted up asking the specs on pirate but I don't think he ever responded. I didn't realize it was local to you.

If it truly has low miles, that is a killer deal. Find out what parts it has and verify the condition by pulling the pan. You should still be able to see the cross hatching on the cylinder walls. He does not mention what the compression is, so you may need to run premium. If he still has it installed it would be a good idea to drive it or atleast hear it run.

A large TBI with an EBL would work great on that engine.

Also, make sure that the heads ae newer and have the 3 mounting bolt holes on the front. You can then use your serpentine setup just like stock.

thanks for the good info... I might have to look him up and wander over there for a looky lue. Not sure that my toy junk/th350 is up to take that much abuse though.

the EBL has a rev limiter :D just limit it to 4500rpm
& you'll never see the big power! ;p

I wouldn't mind 600hp if I could afford it

Thats the EBL I'm talking about. It has alot of cool features and can store up to 8 different tunes that are switchable by laptop, or a dash switcher. It has on-board flash so there is no chip burning required. took me about an hour to do the self-install.

Its a very powerful tuning system with many options (you can even add a switch for a high idle for onboard air, winching etc..)

This computer is on par with the modern ecm's with alot of options. Its a little spendy but has great support. The developer posts frequently on the Thirdgen forums under the username Rbob.
It also has the option of controlling multiple injectors for dual TBI's or DIY Multiport.

so far I'm real happy with it. I'm not sure how it compares to the new Holly commander TBI systems, but I can't imagine the Holley system to have many options.

ok, I've got an idea (I'm using this expression lightly) of what I need as far as hardware (for the tbi stuff)... how do you go about learning how to tune on Tunerpro or winbin.

When you get the EBL, he sends a disc with a stock bin and XDF file (set the configurable options of the bin) on it & gives you instructions on what needs to be changed first along with an xls file to calculate fueling requirements. I picked Tunerpro cause its free & is more widely used. I spent a few hours playing with the bin and it all started to make sense. There are still a few things I don't understand but it really is pretty straight forward. Hopefully I'll start getting the tune dialed in by next week. I did a couple of learns with the NB02 and its worked pretty good but will be much faster with the WB02

As far hardware, get a 454 tbi (675cfm +/-), use your stock injectors and an adapter plate to the perfomance intake.

Pull the spring out of the stock pressure regulator and use an external adjustable regulator with a vacuum port and pressure gauge. You can get these on ebay for around $40 or use the expensive Aeroquip one. I used one that bolts in place of the stock one & it is a pain to adjust & does not have a guage. Change your lines to AN-6 braided while your at it.

With fuel pressure set to 40psi this should support 400hp, or you can bump it to 50 for 450+hp.

Get the EBL and a wideband o2 sensor and you should be set. You need a min of dual 2.5" exhaust .

Man, its amazing all the info you have. I posted something in the general 4x4 section on pirate and I swear if I turn up my speakers really loud I can hear crickets in that thread. I did some ebay research today and see alot of the holley throttle bodies on there going for about $200? Looks like they flow about 670 cfm. Are they worth bidding on or are you just buying the holley name?

I have WAY too many hour researching this stuff :) If your not in the "in-crowd" in the Gen 4x4 forum, its difficult to get answers. I hate that place.

The holley TBI's are ok but stock GM is better. You can get the 50mm bored TBI form Xtremeefi on EBAY for around $200, but I like the 454 TBI better anyway. The only reason I did not do the 454 tbi is I got the bored TBI locally for next to nothing with a mountain of tbi parts, also I would have to have changed the throttle linkage (for the 700r4 TV cable) and re-wire the TPS for the 454 flat style connector (more compact since the 454's came with a thick adapter to spread bore). the 454 TBI is very solid and less prone to baseplate leaks like the bored SBC tbi's, they can also be bored out to 54mm to flow 850cfm. You should be able to find one without the large injectors for $60-100 on ebay.

R/t does datalogging and emulating. The same stuff that the Whatsupdisplay does with the EBL, so that is why you only need standard tunerpro with the EBL. It may have some advantages for use with the EBL but I'm not sure what they are.

Then what good are ya then? :D

Serioulsly though, thanks for being a good sport and helping me get pointed in the right direction.

Here's that guy's response with that 383..

"well too tell you the truth, i bought my buddys blazer and i know he put alot of money into this motor, and he moved and i cant get ahold of him, but it was in a blazer with 49 iroks, and it could burn them out easy, he gave me all the recipts but they dont say much on parts wish just work wish, so all i know its a badass motor thats why i am letting it go so cheap is because i dont know what parts were used so my lose your gain."

I figured it had to be something like that. He should have no problem letting you pull the pan to see what crank and rods are installed, then pull the valve covers and see if it has rollers, see if it has aftermarket heads (should be brand and model cast somewhere in the head) for $6k it should be full roller with ported aluminum heads, billet crank and forged pistons. Also pull the intake & see if there is porting work done on the heads. This should all take less than 30min and if there are good parts it may be worth it.

don't pull the intake
easy to identify the intake. Easy to identify the heads..

Pull the valve cover and the pan. $12.00 worth of gaskets max.. THat will tell you everything you need to know..

And of course if at all possible do a leakdown test on it. It could have a nice forged crank, Oliver rods, JE pistons... and a crap hone job.
