Are there any pigs out there running FJ60 axles in SUA? Just curious to see what it looks like.

71 views and no responses. I guess no one has done this before? Maybe I'll be the first.

Any thoughts?

...

I want to do this. But I fear they won't be strong enough....

I don't see the work vs payout being worth the effort in a spring under setup.

You gain 3" width but you have to widen front springs or cut FJ60 housing up to use FJ55 width.

Strength would be the same as 78+ FJ55 axle(knuckle strength)

I wouldn't do it myself.

Outboarding the front springs would be needed to run the 60 width axles whether it was a SUA or a SOA setup. It may not be the same setup but it would be necessary for the applications.

I was just thinking that since I have the 60 axles anyways, I might throw them under the 55 to widen the stance a little. I'm running a 4" +/- spring lift with tall and skinny tires. The track looks a bit narrow and I thought that widening the track would make it look better and have it be less tippy. Not that it is tippy, it just looks that way.

You may be right though.....it may be more work than what it is worth.

.......

I was thinking that most peoples piggies are pre-78 so it would be an upgrade in strength and width. And for some it would make the swap from
drum to disc on the front a cinch. I have spacers on mine to get some width for stability so I agree with you on the narrow stance. I say go for it. If I didn't have visions of bigger tires I would do it in a heartbeat! I have the fj60 axles just sitting and waiting also. I'm holding back because I want to make the right decision and build right the first time. I'm poor and can't afford to change my mind in the middle or shortly after I put it together. Good luck!

what is the center pin width on the 60 vs the 55

.

i'm setup about the same on the blue pig and it is freakin' tippy. i'm thinking of at least doing the rear since that's easy.

when i did the green pig's rear (soa), i was disappointed to find the 3" really didn't look any different. you have to know what you're looking for to see the difference. from everyone i've talked to, tho, it makes all the difference in handling

....

How much wider are the 80 axles over the 60 axles? Is there a strength difference?

on my old fj40 I had an soa on 60 axles. it can be done but it is more work than what its worth. the rear is easy, do that to get the upgraded brakes.for the front, use the stock 40/55 housing with the 60 outers and get a set of wheel spacers to match the rear:cheers:

I had 60 axles on my SOA troopy and I did not think it was that bad. It widened the stance a little and made it more stable.

I'm not a fan of wheel spacers. They are not an option.

I am thinking I might proceed with the SUA 60 axles on my 55. It probably won't happen for awhile. I already have the 60 axles and I can use my 55 axles for my 45 SWB pickup. Kind of the best of both worlds since the 55 needs to be a little wider and my 45 needs front discs.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Rear axle absolutely. You have full float and disc brakes. You've got a third member with bigger carrier bearings than FJ40-FJ62. You've got the larger splined pinion. The "big" problem to me is the electric locker. From what I've heard, if you break an axle shaft in it, you almost have to cut the axle housing apart to get it out:eek:

Actually the bearings are the same as V-6 mini-truck so slightly smaller, but still more than strong enough. I think at the time Toyota was standardizing bearing sizes and the traditional LC carrier bearing went away.

It is a great axle with an airlocker and I am considering swapping one into my SOA 60.

True about the e-locker.

If you look at pictures of Brian Steen's 55 he ran 60 full floater rear and wheel spacers up front. Here is one more pic of a local 55 with the same setup. The answer is yes it looks awesome... 33 x 10.5 R 15 FJ60 rims

Thanks Dre. That's exactly the picture I was looking for.

That 55 looks pretty good with a little wider stance and 33X10.50's. That was my plan exactly.

Now, I just need to find a 60 series full float rear.

what pic? i see nothing, not even a redx,

i was going to do 60 axles on mine to get rid of the offset wheels and trunnion bearing issue, but decided if i'm gonna do all the work i might as well hold off and get 80 series axles.

You would? I think an 80 front axle would be a poor choice given where the steering arms mount. The rear could work though.

I've been thinking about mog portals on the factory axle tubes. Not exactly bolt on or factory, but if I were to do any major fab for getting a better axle.........
