I'm finally starting to buy some interior parts for my '70 pig, and I've got a question I'm sure some of you can answer: On a '70, would the cargo panels have had air vents or are they solid without vents? Small detail, but if I have the choice, I want them to be as correct as possible.

Thanks, David

If the out side of your body at the rear sides do not have vent trim around the side maker light you do not have interior cargo vent.

My 72 did not have rear venting

After seeing scrapdaddy’s. I have succumbed to the elegance of new SMS door panels and am ordering tomorrow. My purest principals aside. If my front drivers and passenger side were in better condition I would keep original, but alas.

I do feel the need to keep the ashtrays though.

When was your 72? Mine is a Dec 72 and had vents.

It seems like sometime between March and June of each year some type of modification in production takes place whether cosmetic of mechanical.

During the time I owned my precious, the only dates I was concerned about were the birth dates of my passengers ( wink wink). “Hence the overland curtains”.

I feel the same way you do about the door panels. It's difficult to pass up the fresh look of the new ones from Steve. Also, you mentioned the ash trays. I'd like to keep mine, but they're in pretty bad shape. Are you aware of a source for their replacement? I certainly don't want to install these old ashtrays in a new door panel. Thanks.

I ordered a full set and can't imagine putting old ones back in after receiving them- very nice quality. In hind-sight I wish I would have omitted the ash trays for a cleaner look.

I'm probably going to do exactly what you mentioned: just do away with the ash trays altogether. It's not like they're going to get used......

Yep- restoring fj55 ashtrays is likely the pinnacle of "1st World Problems"
...or an opportunity. Attached shows 3 1/2 Kicker speakers mounted into the trimmed out ash tray cutout. Fit perfectly into the metal brace that supported the ash trays, which allows solid speaker to metal mounting. Speaker covers are recycled OEM ones that originally covered the factory's single rear speaker in the cargo panel.

Nice tip Jim!👍
Probably wouldn't work for later model doors without vent windows. Believe the main door glass that goes all the way forward might interfere.

I don't want to take money from a supporting vender. I appreciate that we have people that make anything for the Pig. That being said, I got this sheet of ABS for $35 and was able to make all 6 panels.

I'm thinking any speaker that fits in the ashtray opening won't be deep enough to interfere with the windows- I just pulled my 79 panels.

Looks like you may be right. Been awhile since I had mine off.
