I have a 64 fj45 swb. i want to move the gas tank under bed in place of spare tire carrier. Is this possible to do while keeping the gas intake where it belongs??? Any help would be appreciated Thanks, joe
Guess it could be done btw I have been told that an S10 pickup tank will fit I also will be selling an extended tank from my fj45 lwb I think it is the one from spector dont think it has ever had gas in it.

I would think it would take a very long time to fill up the tank. TOOOOO flat for to long, plus you'd have the flex between the cab and bed.

what's wrong with were it's located now??

IMO, if you're gonna do an 'under bed' mount and you don't want to cut a hole in the side of the bed, cut a hole in the floor of the bed and be done with it.

Having a fill hose that long is ASKING for trouble. You'll have a VERY HARD time adequately venting the truck, and anything less than optimal venting will cause a constant backpressure 'puking' effect when you try to fill it.

I fabbed in a aluminum fuel cell under the bed of my FJ45LPB where the spare tire carrier was. I purchased the fuel cell from Summit. They have tons of various sizes and dimensions available. The one I chose is 19 gallons, only 8 inches tall and fits perfectly between the frame rails. I modified the filler neck that comes with it from RCI, and fabbed the filler neck spout to run out the side between the bed and the frame rail, right where the wheel well is.
You only see the cap of the spout, just above the rear tire. It fills perfectly at the pump with no issues.
I can upload photos if needed.

You could go the wheelwell route with a steel tank as well. I used the same 22 gallon aux tank that the FJ40s used, mounted in the location of the tire carrier. Welded two tabs across the front that bolt into the brackets for the tire mount, and one piece of angle across the back that matched up with one of the bed supports. Pics are already here on the board somewheres.

Mark, is it possible to do with the original tank?? I have the tank on jack stands right where I want it. It looks possible but I am no expert when it comes to moving gas tanks and what the effects of doing so are. Thanks, joe

What about a 55 tank?

That is what I thought too..........many years ago. I saved a good 55 tank in my backyard for YEARS thinking it would end up under my lwb one day. NO DICE. Not even close. The 55 tank was several inches wider.

Joey, I wouldn't fit the stock tank under the truck. The following saying applies:

just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

The stock tank is very prone to leaks, especially at this stage of the game. The amount of pressure you would have to put on it to secure it UNDER the truck would keep it from EVER being SAFE.

Mark thanks for the info. I was wondering if you might know if I could get my hands on the rear window seals for 64 fj45 swb non removable top. Mine aren't real bad. Nicer ones would be better. Let me know?? Thanks, joe
