I'm having an OME lift installed on my 77 FJ, it currently has a Rancho air shock rig with 35X12.50 BFG AT's and original springs on 10" chrome bullet wheels, ARB's front and rear, and the road ride is terrible in the current setup. I'm getting a set of original/oem wheels and want to know how big a tire I can put on them. I would like to run 33" BFG MT's. Is a 33" to much for the original OEM wheels, or should I put the 33's on my current set of 10" wheels? I certainly don't want any rubbing and it's important that it rides good on the road. Thanks.

33's will be fine on the OEM rim.

Browse the FAQ section in the tech section above, there is a ton of info. Welcome, post up some pics, we like pics.

The 33x10.5 is a popular choice and looks and rides great in my opinion. I am running the toyo MT in this size.

33x10.5r15's BGF ATs on factory wheels. Note, most big name tire companies will not mount 10.5" wide tires on the 5.5" wheels. You will have to find a local shop to mount them for you. That being said, I think they look right and work well.

This is true. Discount tire would not mount them on my 15x6 wheels. Les Schwab did though.

I'm running 31x10.5x15 on OEM rims with OME suspension and couldn't be happier.

Thank you for the reply and suggestions, I just bought this 77 TLC three weeks ago and now the upgrades and repairs begin, can't wait to get rolling. I went to the Veterans Highway forum to look around, will be putting my information in there shortly, thanks again for the info. It'll take me a while to get familiar with the site.

Thanks for the reply, I see a lot of Toyo's out there as well and that's a good looking rig you have there, I plan to post some pics of mine shortly.

Toyo makes some good tires. A year or so ago I had someone at Les Schwab in Prineville (home of Les Schwab) tell me that the Forest Service there runs the Toyo M55 on their rigs because they do better (than other brands) at holding up to the gravel roads they are constantly on.

That OME lift levels that out nicely, good looking rig there, I'm torn between 33's and 31's. Does that setup ride well on the highway?

Don, Thanks for the info, says a lot if the FS is running Toyo's on all their rigs. They put a lot of miles on them no doubt.

Thanks for the reply, I like the stance of your rig, good info on mounting oversize tires on 5.5" wheels.

Having the wheels mounted was a bit of a pain, otherwise I am happy with how it turned out. I've had them on there for about 2 years now and no issues. The FJ40 has a 4" skyjacker spring lift with Bilstein shocks. I also have anti-inversion shackles to correct the spring length and allow them to travel. Its about 1.5" in the front and 2.5" in the rear over the stock height if I remember correctly.

It rides very well with no issues.

If you want to keep the OEM 5.5" 15" wheels and want a tall skinny, BFG 33x10.5 are about the only game in town.

I run them on 3 of my rigs...love them

Pretty sure toyo doesnt make a tall skinny. We had m55 on our lexus lx470....I hated those things, road like a rock, made a ton of noise.. and really didn't handle wOrth a darn....but yes they last forever. We went from the m55 to BFG AT...much better tire for our use

On a 40, a skinnier tire will handle much better than a wide tire.

Torn between 33's and 31's on an OME 2" lift. I split the difference and went with 32x11.50R15 - BFG KO2's.

Yea, but my rims are Toyota OEM units that have been modified out to 9" wide.....Pleased as Punch with the setup. :hillbilly:

Thanks for the reply, I'm a big BFG fan, running BFG AT KO2's on my 13 Tundra CrewMax Rock Warrior. Those 35's currently on my FJ now float bad, I fight it constantly on the road, which is NOT fun.
