your strap is too short because you used thicker foam than OEM. In the picture you posted of the seat open and closed it is pretty clear they are beefier than normal

That could be, I still have the old foam, I'll post us a picture of what I pulled out. I also don't know what year these seats are from, I was guessing when I ordered the strap.

Iam using a total of 3 inches of foam on the bottom, a one inch peice that goes in first around the frame tube, then a two inch peice.

Iam tempted to take one of the seats apart and cut off about a half inch of foam from the top peice. I'll do that and post up the results.

i would just get a larger strap before you start cutting foam - those are the 73-78 seats

It occurred to me, that I still had seat parts, so I recreated how I took the original measurement for the foam.

I basically stacked the sample foam next to the old seat, and took measurements. Then cut a piece and test fitted it into the seat frame. Every measurement I took was lower then the original foam.

So why is it so thick, and the straps don't work? I don't know if this foam is not OEM or not.

alright just went back and looked at my fj40 seat frames in pictures and they are very similar looking to yours.... mine are burried in my garage at the moment but I am cleaning it out tomorrow and i'll try to get measurements if you need them... same seats

I see two things

1) your seat backs look a bit more pushed back than normal ... I.e. It's bent alil too far back ... My seats are 150 miles from me to look lol ... But it does seem they are further than usual... Also looking at the seat bottoms they look alil tweeked as well

2) did you compress the foam when you were stretching the vinyl? I didn't read that in your write up... When upholstering they do need compression ... Either by standing/kneeling on it or if you squeeze the seat together you can sandwich it

The quality is great, the fit, and do the job of holding up the seat! ;)

Btw... I case your wondering :)

the seats you have are 74-77 or very very early 78'... 78' there were 3 different designs for rear seats

78' they had no leg ... Then...

Leg with bumpers as well... Then...

Just leg no bumpers

Thanks for the write up and pictures. I've been saving up my pennies, so the link to CruiserCrap.com and the heat out here is making me seriously consider pulling the trigger on the VA FJ40 AC system.

Seats look spectacular....................gotta do them on my '78!!!!!!!!!!!!
