1977 FJ40 - 2F Engine: Need to Replace my leaky core radiator. This is primarily a brewery tour vehicle. Trying to keep the car as original as possible but would like to reliably drive on freeway occasionally without overheating.
1. I've been reading on this site about bad radiator hoses, etc. Where is the most reliable location to purchase quality cooling system parts, so I'm only doing this once.
2. Is it worth upgrading the radiator to an all aluminum unit over the OEM radiators available? I would break my "original parts" rule if it greatly improved the function of the cooling system.
3. Already planning to replace the leaking Radiator, T-stat, and all hoses. No indications of pump wearing out, but is it worth doing that as well, while I have it torn apart? Found in the past that the next weakest component seems to always fail after you replaced the already failed part.
Just looking for some recommendations/validations on what I'm planning to do.

Years back I bought a brass 4 core on close out from Radiator King at a very good price. I like brass I can and have fixed brass radiators in the field, not an aluminum guy.
I think CityRacer in the vendor list has hoses, others likely have them too. I keep my old belts, hoses, wipers ect. as back up - I change before failure. Always good to have a spare alternator, starter, water pump thermostat sort of things on hand - they don't go bad on the shelf.

Just go with a new copper OEM radiator from City Racer. Mine always stays right at 180 deg but even going up to 210 deg is fine. Might as well put in a new water pump while you have it apart and check to make sure your fan clutch is working well. Big aluminum radiators are for the V8 guys who have trouble with overheating.

With your planned usage.....there is absolutely no reason why new oem parts wouldn't serve you.

FWIW, here are the 4 OEM radiator hoses & clamps for my '77 FJ40:
16571-61040 - Radiator inlet (upper hose - 8/76 to 1/79 )
90460-49062 - Inlet hose clamps ID=49 (X2) (12/69 to 1/79)

16571-61050 - Radiator outlet (lower, radiator side hose - 8/76 to 7/80)
190916-01056 - Radiator outlet (lower, pump side hose - 3/69 to 7/80)
90460-58013 - Outlet hose clamps ID=58 (X3) (3/69 to 1/79)
96111-10500 - Outlet hose clamp ID=50 (X1) (3/69 to 1/79)

16261-60011 - Water pump by-pass (3/69 to 7/80)
96112-10330 - by-pass hose clamps (X2) (3/71 to 7/80)

Thank you for the part numbers for cross reference. Already had a bad number on one of the hoses

Good to know, don’t want to overdo it and would like to keep it as original as possible

Just curious, does your 77’ have a clutch fan on the water pump? Mine does not. Do you know if the actual pump is the same regardless?

New OEM radiator is available from your local dealer. Just bought one a couple months ago.

Yep, mine has the fan clutch and I run the non oil cooler Aisin WPT-063 (NLA) water pump. Click here for a Toyota EPC parts diagram of the water pump and fan clutch. As for different water pump sizes, I'll let someone with more knowledge than me answer that one.

Note: I installed the Aisin FCT-049 Fan Clutch, a robust unit which is typically for an FJ80 but can be used for the 40/45/55/60.

What I think I have learned about that so far:
1) Later on in the 70s(?) or early 80s(?) a new waterpump came along that was "shorter". Perhaps to make room for the fan clutch and AC (?)
B) The earlier waterpump, like the one I buy for a '76 block usually comes with a mounting flange on the shaft for a fan clutch. I just swap flanges.
III) The bolt pattern is different between the fan clutch and the direct drive fan. I think that is the only difference between the pumps.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the hoses! I just ordered mine, not a fan of the bend in the water pump bypass hose. Is it engineered to have a bend? I was thinking of fabricating a stainless add in piece, a 3/4" inch pipe I turned the threads off, cut it at angle so it has a similar diagonal pattern. I haven't decided if I'll tig weld or arc weld with a 316 e stick, but I just feel like that bend restricts flow.

You're waaaaay over thinking that.
The oe hose is just fine.

It has been way harder than I expected to find a water pump without fan clutch and without oil cooling. No longer available from Toyota or aisin. Only place I found it was at fjparts.com. Is this a reputable site? My credit card bank flagged it as a frequent fraudulent site. Do they provide quality parts? Nothing wrong with my current pump but didn’t want to overhaul everything else in my cooling system and then find out that my pump then becomes the weakest link and then have to take it all apart again.
