any experience with these 16” steelies on a disc converted axle?
Dirt Hugger,

Based on your question, I’m hoping you’re trying to solve the same problem I am. I have disc brakes on the front with spacers and aftermarket rims. Wanted to remove the spacers and go back to the original wheels but can’t fit them over the disc brakes. Think I need to go to a 16” wheel to fit but looks like the factory caps don’t work unless you do what Dogfishlake did. Let me know if you want to compare notes.

City Racer has a 16” rim but they won’t just sell me one to figure out whether it will work or not. Not willing to buy 4 to figure out whether it will or won’t work.

Dogfishlake,
If I end up going with the Wheel Vintiques, would you be willing to make me caps.

Regards,
Brad

I've used both the 16x7 wheel vintiques and the city racer 16s with disc axles. No concerns or issues.

City Racer 16s. Late model fj40 front disc axle and TSM rear disc conversion. 255/85 Yokohamas

I had a question about some new wheels I just mounted so I figured I would pass along some specifics in case anyone else was interested.

I was in need of new tires and didn't like my options for 15" x 5.5" stock wheels. After looking around a bit, 235/85-16's on a 7" wide rim, seems like a good size for me, and offers lots of tire options. I went for the steel smoothie wheels based on the info in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/need-steel-rim-replacment-help-16x7.802540/page-7. Love2fly and the others had been down all the usual channels, and seemed to have done all the homework. I ordered the 16" x 7" wheel with 4" backspace from Summit Racing:

I had a tire shop mount a tire and the rim; and check front and back for fit and/or issues. Fit was good, so I ordered 4 more and had a local outfit powdercoat them "new black hammer":

Everything works great and no rubbing anywhere. New tires are almost 3" taller, so I get 1.5" more clearance. Tough these tires are taller but about the same width as my old 235/75-15's the steering isn't noticeably different. Next on my list is a 2.5" lift, which I think will also improve things a bit.

5 wheels from Summit (free shipping): $484.85
Sandblast and powdercoat: $325
Tires, mounting, etc.: $999.25
for a grand total of $1809.85.

The wheels come primer gray like in the top pic above, and could be fine as-is, or just get rattle-canned for a more economic option. Another option I've heard about, is to get the wheels from Wheel Vintiques directly, and they can do custom backspacing for an extra $25 per wheel. I have not confirmed this personally, but another guy I know locally is going that route.

Happy trails...matt
Looks good! I just looked up my tire code on myand my shoes are 19 years old! Still have some decent tread with minor

Looks nice!
Yikes! I just looked up the date on my 265/75/R16 GYWrangler ATM- they are 19 years old! I'm surprised, the treads are still decent.
Time to get me some new shoes. I'm thinking about 33"ers, 255/75 more specifically 😁

Thanks navydivedoc and Puke. Have either of you tried to fit the hubcaps or did you just go without.

Hubcaps fit fine on city racer, not at all on the Vintiques.

When I bought my 74 they didn't have hub caps...
Haven't had the desire to buy any either.

I really like the look of those Vintiques. When you got them were they powder coated, primed, or painted? Did you paint them?

That is the grey paint they came with.

They come powder coated with grey primer. You can then have them powder coated without a the cost of having to sandblast them first.

Will these wheels with 4” backspacing work on a early (1974) drum brake 40?
