I always thought the round rear fender shape indicated FJ25.

Educate me; how can you tell this one is an FJ40?

The rear wheel openings were chopped into that shape.

You can also tell it's a mid 60's FJ40 by the long running boards, 3 on the tree, and the description in the listing!

It was the height of the bottom of the rear quarter (FJ25 is flush with the top of frame) and the presence of the vacuum 4wd and shifter on the engine side firewall for me. :)
 
When I read the ad, I did see that he described it as a 40, but I thought maybe he just didn't know what he had.

I see the fender shape does have a ragged look to it.
