IMO, you should take the bed down 'in steps'. First, just take the mounting tabs off, leaving the channels above them intact. You can vertically tab from the channels to the sides of the tube for mounting, then build interior 'stands' to take the load.

If you're gonna go forward with the opening hatch in the back of the cab, you may have to set the bed a bit lower than cab deck height to make sure the hatch will clear.

Having a removable bed with the tube setup for trail running is TOTALLY BADASS. NOW I am jealous.

Rust and Bondo held me up on using the Plasma Cutter.

How else to cut many inches out of the bed?

I love those chop saws. I used to use one all the time for for building dry masonry walls.
