Back in April I got a PM from @desmocruiser

Seems reasonable right? I know this guy. He drives a HZJ73 I built a while back. He gave me really good beers at the 70 ride at Windrock. Why not.

I pick up the phone and call him. He tells me I’ve apparently been helping him troubleshoot his issue on Mud for a while. Of course I don’t remember so he sends me a link.

Damn it. I said yes before he sent me the link

What’s funny is that that thread was started by some poor guy and at page 3 Patty moved in and took that s*** over lol

So I happened to be riding to Knoxville to meet my boy Brendan to pass his 70 back to him so we did the swap at Pattys storage, loaded his turd 40 up and even hauled his buddy’s 100 down to @RocketCityCrzrs

Worked out nice. He even had more of that damn good Knoxville beer.

So I got this thing 3 months ago and we commenced to ordering parts.

The first movement on parts came via @orangefj45

Patty sent out a 40 series top cover and had Georg build him a nice new H55 setup with tcase gears (I think)

I’m not a huge fan of H55s in 40s because of all of the required mods but the 40 series top cover makes a lot of the problems go away.

It all falls into place now. Last July you did voice an opinion on my swapping for a 5 speed … took the advice and it is been better than I would have hoped for…3.70 gears

Another thing you need to make an H55 work is a crossmember. Some people hang them off the bellhousing but I’m no fan of this. Patty had been doing his homework and it seems @lcwizard had a nice option.

So that got ordered.

That’s my go-to but this is a rock crawler for Patty so the H55/split makes sense for his application

The cool ass skid crossmember landed last week.

As you can see, instead of me spending a bunch of time and money troubleshooting all the issues he was having with this motor Patty made the call to pull this tired old 2F for a shiny new one with woo pow

Yesterday I spent the entire day gutting this old girl. Interior has to come out because of the H55 install.

And it’s out.

I’m headed out tomorrow on a cruiser drop off and pick up trek and on the way home I’m taking a jog over to Illinois for the shiny new motor for this thing.

I’m going to knock off early today and get ready to ride

Going to be an awesome build, I have kicked this idea around for a couple of years, glad to see it finally coming together!

Hope everyone has a great 4th of July weekend!

Ordinarily, I would be aggravating Nolan for a progress update, but he better be celebrating the 250 with clean hands around a cheeseburger and cold beer!

Cheers’

Picked this up outside of Marion Il at 8:30 am on my massive sweep in the east this last week.

Build back starts tomorrow

The @Voodoocruisers 2F builder does a fantastic job.

Comp cam. 4.4 Wisco pistons. 9:1 head.

Cool thing is he sends the rockers off for machine and polish and they come back pushing these LS valves smoothly.

It was set up with a GM alternator during an old Vintage Air addition. I removed the old AC and went back to a factory mount and used this adapter and kept a GM alternator set up.

Definitely open to other more simple/Toyota options.

I hope you have a plan for the Power Steering, I would love to go back to a Toyota style pump and eliminate the existing type of set up!

The factory PS pump does not exist anymore. Plus the new head is like your old head. No place for the factory mount.

This TPI setup you have is legit and actually looks great. I’ve never seen one. Most I’ve seen are ugly.

Not sure of the bracket source, I added the TPI pulley later to get better alignment and we went through multiple belts to get a proper fit and eliminate squealing when hot.

Hope we were successful, seems
like the best current option, glad to see a few of my shiny new parts going back on, solid progress!

Got it all put together and found out the harmonic balancer has one thick and one thin groove.

No good. Luckily the other motor I bought had the correct pulleys.

Took a lot to get it all apart but it’s done.

Clutch now
