“When they were still creative and inspiring…” brother you nailed it, nothing but lame IFS vehicles since the 80. I also hear a rumor they may be dropping production of the 70 series too, although apparently us US 4X4 fans have never been good enough for them to bring it here.

Is that one of the fenders you just bought? Looks awful. I would want my money back.......lol
I thought so too once I found bondo… but it is still 10X better the the ones it has! I just have to put in some sweat equity. Lol

I believe you could still get brand new OEM fenders from @dieselbj42 for 535.00 each sent in a wood crate. New fenders are so sweet.
I still could! I could not nail down who was still selling them.. alternately I got a screaming deal on these and I’m learning a new skill. I was always afraid of body work (I know… wrong hobby…), but now I have a good reason to try it. And it’s kinda fun! It’s like mini blacksmithing!

Your doing great work SETH !

keep it up ......... :)

A slapper is used to take out the small anomalies in ste steel surface.
Its often made of spring steel or wood.
Here is a picture from the Tin Man Tech site. You can see how a slapper is used. You press a dolly on the bottom and carefully hit the top with the slapper. When you are hitting in the right position you hear the slapper hitting the dolly.

Here you see it used on a car body.

This is another type of slapper, from Bens Metal shaping.

And this is a slapping file. The slapping file leaves small marks on the surface which help you to see where the highs and lows are and it has a shrinking effect.

Then there are the wooden slappers often covered with leather. They leave even les markings on the surface.

Because of the larger surface area of a slapper they take out the small imperfections without damaging or stretching the area around it. Once you get the hang of it it is very rewarding to work with them.

Done pounding for now. Time to paint and sand the passenger fender. I also have to rebuild the spare carb I have, so I can swap it in and see if it acts better than my current one. Now that things are picking back up on the cruiser I think I’m going in to many directions… have to slow down… 😩

Well it’s been raining for a second day straight, but I think the passenger fender is just about ready for paint. I still have to clean and prime the underside. If enyone is hesitant about doing your own body work, DONT BE!! I am amazed at how little time it’s taking. The biggest part is patience! You can do this!!!

Well. I was sizing things up. Looks like my “new” 71 fender might be missing some things my 77 cruiser needs. I can put in some rivnuts for the holes, but that bracket will cause some irritation I think.

New things! Screws and bolts are in for the fender and rear headrest! Put those in. And started to do some tearing apart of the front end to see what can come off, what needs drilled and what needs welded. Looks like it’s going to be a bit….

I’m at a pause on the fenders. We are having a hot and muggy spell so I don’t feel like welding. That and I’m waiting on a few more little parts from Toyota. So I decided to try my hand at rebuilding the state carburetor I have. Come to find out the carburetors are only one month off from when they where built! My cruiser is a 4/77, It’s carb was built 3/77, and the spare I just received was built 4/77!!!! Almost twins!!!!

I’ve striped the old fender of all its parts and measurements. Then I finally got in my rive nut tool, drilled and riveted the new spots I needed to match the old fender. now all that’s left is to sand and weld on the last part, the igniter bracket. Things are moving along.

I finally welded and painted the fender. And after a bit of a struggle, the fender is on. It looks pretty good! I will admit, the turn signal looks a little forward. But I’ll take it for now.the last 2 are after and before.
