The extra brackets could be for mounting a V8 but its hard to tell from the photo's. Please keep photo updates coming with the build.
Good luck

I think Pighead has finally converted me. I used to question why we couldn't call our 40s "FJs"---but, have you ever looked hard at the specs of these "exceptionally inferior" vehicles(as he calls them)? take a look at the wimpy axles--
They also do not conform (as far as I can tell) to the naming convention Toyota originally stated for the "FJ"--as to body style and engine.
The grandkids will never learn---

...40, FJ40, LandCruiser, Land Cruiser, Toy, (your rig's nickname here)...almost anything except jeep or FJ. Toyota ruined everything for us LandCruiser owners by naming an exceptionally inferior vehicle "FJ cruiser" and causing all this confusion.

Oh, and Welcome :flipoff2:
FJ need tow from grandpa FJ40.webp

if those levers sit for a while they freeze up but there are grease fittings on them that most folks dont know about .need to spray grease and and wiggle welcome to mud

Ill try that reverse thing tom. I just picked up a hobart handler 140 a few hours ago. Cant wait to get making bumpers and fixing up the rust. What are some good place for parts? Also need some advise on which spft top to buy. Is best top good? I rather have a hard top and doors but cant seem to find any in my area. Also the front head light bezel is upside down? Haha good eye. The fj is pretty complete. Has the jump seats but needs redone have the spare tire carrier and a skid plate and some weird looking brackets. He said they are a rare cross member bracket. Any ideas

Welcome to the Land Cruiser world. You will find that aftermarket is fairly good, but nothing like in the Jeep world. Usual suspects for general FJ40 accessories include:
-Spector Off Road (SOR) (see memorium at top of forum page)
-Cool Cruisers of Texas (CCOT)
-JT Outfitters (JTO)
-Man a Fre (MAF)

Used parts:
-SOR
-Classic Cruisers
-Cruiserparts.net

Also don't be afraid to stop in to your local Toyota parts dealer for OEM parts, if that's the direction you prefer to go with your build. You will be amazed what is still available from the factory (albeit at a much higher price than any equivalent Jeep part would be).

There are other specialty shops out there for specific products.

A neat thing about Land Cruisers is that Toyota offered factory options for many different things: soft tops, PTO winches, diesel engines, power steering, air conditioning (later model FJ40s). Folks around here, in general, tend to lean toward sticking nearer to factory options than to go out and buy a bolt-on aftermarket bit that may be of lower quality or make their precious FJ40 look more (gulp) Jeep-like! ::eek: :ban:

:grinpimp:

So, to answer your question:
Bestop makes a good product obviously, but it does make an FJ40 look a bit like a Jeep, so a popular option around here is a Factory Soft Top replica. If you search for that or the acronym "FST" on this forum you will find many hits. Folks like Trollhole, SouthBostonFJ, ocdbeetle (Jim), and even the Paki tops from Ehsan are all available.

That header you have is a so-called "tri-Y" Downey design, which is regarded as a pretty good header design. Check marksoffroad.net for more info. However, if you take off your Cali emissions components, be aware that those are very rare and hard to find and probably worth something to someone. In fact most Land Cruiser parts are, so anything you take off try to recycle to someone who can use them. There are not as many of these beasts floating around as Jeeps, so parts sharing is more common.

Also be aware that emissions requirements are becoming more strict as time goes by, so even if you are in an area that does not currently require emissions you may have to conform some day. Happened here in Denver recently.

Good luck

welcome

Great info I'll do some searching and I didn't plan to scrap anything. I know parts are getting rare for these. I'll check those sites out. I'm looking for all the hood parts for windshield and I plan to get rid of the rust issue by replacing the panels. Should be a good time.

CCOT, Pacol, and Real Steel are names I've heard about supplying sheet metal for cruisers. I laugh when my buddy complains about $2-3K for a repro cj7 body. Man at least you can buy one!

Welcome to the club... Nice lookin 40...

Haha ya. Ive been working on trying to get my turbo ford ranger done so i can start on my land cruiser. 8 degrees today and it still fires right up. My freaking heater went out in garage but still busting my butt to get things going haha.

I'm guessing somewhat in the area of Indiana

Well I've been working on my turbo project pretty hard to get it out of my way to start on the 40. I cant decide on what top to run. I can get a new soft top but id love to have a hard top. I've been doing some searching around and found a hard top but it doesn't have any rear doors. It also comes with hard side doors. My question is how do I know what style doors to find for the rear. I'd like to run ambulance style doors but any will do. Right now I have a bolt on rear aluminum tail gate thing. Any suggestions.

Went and tickered with the 40 today. Finally nice enough to go play with it. Still cant get it into 2wd. I got it to move side to side easily but wont go up. Also noticed the door hinge is broke. Found this in glove box.
