Would be easier for him to register outside of Washoe County (reno) at a family members house in Carson City, Mound House, Dayton, or any one of the small cities within a 30 mile radius of Reno.

On a more build oriented note... Just put in my order for vacuum line and smog items from JimC. Hoping to get some good weather for a few days so I can desmog this bitch!

So thought this was pretty awesome.
Last weekend my parents came up for the birth of my niece. While in the waiting room my dad and I were talking about the Land Cruiser and why I had bought it. Basically, I told him, I was tired of having to take the car to the dealer or mechanic anytime some random light came on and have always loved this particular series Land Cruisers. He asked if I had all the tools I needed, and I told him that I didn't yet but was going to need things like a timing light, torque wrench, etc. so I can do the timing on the LC, do a valve job, replace all the shoes/pads, etc. And he got an excited look on his face and said, Ok next time we are up I will bring you a care package!!

Well they came up last night and here is what he brought to me..... (mind you these tools are as old as I am if not older)

Old tools are the shiz

I have a few from my grandpa and uncle. Inch-pound torque wrench is my fave. Need to use it on my oil pan just to check it :)

You have no excuse not to work on it now though :hillbilly:

Oh dont worry dude... I have the DeSmog stuff (beside the pulley) coming from JimC this week as well as all the replacement vacuum line. Weather is supposed to be nice through the rest of the week with the temps slowly creeping back up to the 70s so figure I will probably pull the smog pump on Wednesday or Thursday to gut it and have the truck down for a day or two.

Actually that is a good question.. If I pull the smog pump, remember it is not connected via a belt at this time. and block the J tube (hillbilly fix) will I have to worry about anything? Can I run the truck with the smog pump out?

Those tools are rad! I inherited a bunch of old school snapon stuff from my dad. Think of him every time I touch one! Had the local dealer fix one and he even thought old school was cool.
Cheers!

So found out from JimC that I can completely detach the smog pump prior to doing the desmog (since mine doesn't have a belt connecting it) and not worry about the system at all. Went to my first local club meeting and the guys there have pretty much convinced me that I should drop the pulley/devained smog pump all together and look at replacing it with a Sanden 508 or similar air pump. This would provide more than adequate on-board air for airing up my tires when I do some off-roading. Figure I will start things slowly with that and look for a pump from the local PnP and see what I can find.

Just waiting on the EGR Gasket for the desmog and since I have next week off and will only be traveling after Wednesday, that gives me a few days to work on the truck.

Well the desmog has begun. Hoping to have her back together and running strong before the end of the weekend. Found out that BVSV1 had a broken nipple prior to starting so gonna have to run off #2.

Progress so far. Still removing spaghetti!!
One of the most indispensable tools has been a nice sharp exacto knife.

Ok anyone know what this is? Think it is the servo for the old cruise control but not sure.

Line wraps up to the firewall and then down to the throttle linkage I believe (see second pic).

Desmog complete

Well I finished the Desmog for the most part this morning, all that is left to do is adjust the timing. Since BVSV1 was broken I had to use BVSV2 which according to the Desmog document would cause the engine to run rough during the warm-up phase. And boy is that true, without the timing adjustment and everything she idles right at or under 500rpm. I have to give her a little choke so that she will run up to 650rpm-ish so that the battery light will turn-off. Took her for a short outting and she runs beautifully through all gears, no more stumbling, bucking, etc!!! :bounce::bounce2:

I was seriously surprised at how smooth she ran. But there does seem to be a tick when I open the hood, which I believe is an indicator of an exhaust manifold leak (if I can ever figure out how to embed the damn video). So looks like after baselining the brakes I will have to tackle that exhaust leak, but I did notice a large clump of "crap" on the downpipe. I am assuming that one of the POs attempted to fix some leak or hole in the pipe and this is the result..

For reference here is the thread I started for the desmog...https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/653750-desmog-help-rtm-but-not-urgent.html

Oh yeah and here is the after shot for a little more desmog porn!

Just did some digging and found how to adjust the AC Idle Up. When I would turn on the A/C it would fluctuate idle so found the AC Idle Up screw and got the fluctuation to stop and now she idle a few hundred rpm higher! Then went threw and adjusted the standard idle, got to wait for her to be cold so I can do the fast idle adjustment, that will be for tomorrow.

LOL... Don't know that I would want to do it again Orygun! Actually once things start going together you definitely get a flow and it just starts happening..

I bought the exact amounts of Vacuum line (3mm & 5mm not 6mm) and I still have a few feet left of each which actually amazed me.. I guess I was a little more conservative with my routings or something.
When you do grab yourself an Exacto knife, straight razor, couple extra "T" fittings, and about 3 yellow vacuum nipples (were about $.99 ea from NAPA and even the counter guy was confused as to why they were so expensive).

Was definitely fun getting to know the truck, found a few things that I will need to fix (seem Jim's comments in the desmog thread) but for what it is worth, I got to know my truck real well. Last thing I need to do is figure out the dieseling issue, but think that is timing and can partially be fixed with new spark plugs. That is on the agenda next but all that stuff has to wait until the new year.

Good job G. You ever decide on rust repair or wait a bit on that.

J

Thanks J, yeah I am going to wait until the weather lets up in the spring to tackle that. Right now I got other things I need to take care, brakes being the main, then dieseling, then there are some things that JimC pointed out in the desmog thread that need to be addressed as well. I decided that I am going to get a her to a good baseline before I start tackling anything like rust, suspension, interior, etc.

Good plan G.....:grinpimp: Have a Happy Turkey Day!

You too J! And hoping to figure out the timing and everything soon. She is definitely running rich right now so will have to do the lean drop but dont necessarily want to do that if the timing is off (which it doesnt sound like it is).

She still diesels on shutdown if she has been running for a while so figure a tune-up with the timing reset and the carb lean drop should fix all that.

Yes sir, that's the servo dealio for the cruise control. Good progress so far!

Danny

Thanks dude. Yeah think I am going to have that removed at some point. But need to take care of the brakes next.

Well Merry Christmas everyone!! It definitely has been a cruiser Christmas for me!!
The wife got me some new 6.5" speakers for the doors since mine are shot and some marine vinyl to rebuilt my rear cargo panels. So I got a couple projects coming up soon here. Since her family is so large we pick names for Christmas presents for all the siblings and my sister-in-law got me some new hood bumpers and the OEM 4spd shift knob for the cruiser!!!

We got some serious snow tonight too and just so happened that the wife and I took the cruiser to the in-laws for dinner. Well on the way the m/c pretty much gave up the ghost. Pedal is pretty much going all the way to the floor without much braking power so looks like there will be an order for that this week. On top of that the battery is pretty much done but the in-laws did give me $100 gc to SEARS so looks like a Die-Hard Platinum is in the mix as well.

So all-in-all a definite Cruiser Christmas!!!!

Nice work on the de-smog Greg!
Its amazing how much space there is after removing all that stuff.

When you do the new master cylinder , you may want to do the slave cylinder at the same time.

Merry Christmas!

Ryan
