And to keep the post vomit coming, after some reading found a post where this was happening to someone on a t bucket coupe with drums and the master had been replaced recently. The push rod was adjusted too long and the pressure wasn’t releasing all the at, which led to heat, which led to more pressure etc. I just replaced my master and thought I did the adjustment right, but that makes a lot sense!

Well great news, the brake issue has been resolved. It was absolutely the pedal height. My god it feels like it’s got another 25hp. Drove around for about 20 mins, pulled into my shop and it rolls backwards! Hallelujah!

The bad news is that I’ve overdone it haha. There is a LOT of pedal travel before anything happens. I’ll get there.

I’m really trying to figure out this noise though, it’s a really high squeal. I’m starting to lean towards it’s actually the turbo. It’s kinda hard to hear in this video, but it’s kind of like an extra high pitched squeal on top of the normal turbo sound. Maybe it’s my air filter?

Also, I’ve included a video of the engine running. It sure looks like it’s shaking more than it needs to be, thoughts?

The squeal:

Did some more fiddling today.

The good- got a nice little gauge pod fabbed up for the 3 in 1 EGT gauge, boost and violent temp. Only temporarily hooked up the EGT and boost. Need to pull it apart, paint and make the wiring a little nicer.

The confusing- did another boost leak test and the results were confusing. I don’t hear air coming from anywhere but the oil vapor outlet on the valve cover, and a bolt head down on the injection pump gear cover. It won’t hold for very long and it doesn’t sound like the turbo is really spinning. I had the tester hooked right up to the turbo inlet. I’d think maybe I have totally crap rings, but I had a really good compression test and it fires up at the slightest bump of the key, so all other signs show good compression.

My boost gauge is reading 0 psi at all times. I can’t imagine that’s accurate. EGT, pre turbo, even on a really long full throttle pull mayyybe hits 1,000 F, so no concern there. Also this chirp noise is really befuddling. It’s much louder today and is purely throttle related. I’d say RPM related, but it doesn’t make the noise when I’m coasting no throttle but at the same RPM. Part of me is thinking I blew up the boost compensator? I swear it sounds like someone put a whistle tip in my exhaust somewhere! I’ll try it get a better video tomorrow.

I also cannot move the wastgate actuator rod by hand, at all. Which also introduces the hypothesis that the waste gate isn’t functioning properly. Would explain the lag and smoke under accel.

Did you turn the engine over when you had the boost tester on it? Just a small amount to make sure all valves are closed.

They won’t hold pressure like a cooling system when your source is removed. I assume you are using shop air to test?

Also turbo will not spin with a boost tester.

Exhaust makes it spin
I don’t try turning it over, that’s a good idea. I’ll give that a go tomorrow. Yes I’m using shop air regulated to about 20psi.

Also curious if maybe I’ve got a pinhole somewhere in my welds on the exhaust that is whistling like crazy.

Post turbo exhaust won’t have much exhaust leak noise. There very very little back pressure after turbo.

Does it sound like something is screaming at you but not turbo whistle? If so it’s likely a drive pressure leak.
Boost leak can definitely sound very similar, usually higher pitched.

Just to add I re listened to the videos and all I hear is turbo whistle.
I’ll get a new one up tomorrow. It’s much louder today. I know it’s hard to hear in the videos I posted, but I can certainly hear it in the truck.

Should I be able to move the waste gate arm by hand?

Not sure on the wastegate on these rigs. I know all the light duty domestic trucks you cannot move by hand.

a wastgate that’s sruck closed will actually build more boost

Alright got some more intel. Couple of videos here you can really hear the squeal from, especially the low speed one. It’s definitely directly throttle related.

Also FINALLY got the brake pedal adjusted correctly. Phew.

Lastly, got the boost gauge working. Turns out the gauge cannot read boost from a temp sensor. Who knew? The absolute most I can’t get the turbo up to is 14psi, so I think I need a waste gate controller to increase that and clear up my smoke.

Well I’ll be damned if the old soap and water trick, with a new and improved boost leak tester didn’t find the leak- the small little seal on the butterfly valve/ throttle plate. I got the old one out and of course my “full engine gasket kit” doesn’t have another one. I could steal the whole throttle plate off my spare 12HT, but that gasket is likely just as old. Any ideas on a source are appreciated!

ordered several different sizes from this website, should be here monday- will report back what, if any of them work. I'm measuring at 16mm outside, 10mm inside, and 5mm thick, though its rubber, so hard to get a super precise measurement.

Now that it's down, I guess it's a good time to do some wiring. uhg. Also ordered some longer leaf spring pins to add some caster. It's got some wobble and is really twitchy after the front springs. The Terrain tamer shackles are about 1in longer than I took off, so certianly made a change there.
