There is a trail that runs to the east towards Weikert. It's at one of the summits along Strongs Mtn Road. It appeared to be a hiking trail but it's a spider trail called Longwell Draft Rd. I was told that it can be challenging with numerous water crossings. I would have taken it but I had the boss w/ me and her spine was getting jarred apart.

In the right conditions, Strongs Mtn and Poe Paddy Drive could be pretty exciting.
If one could setup a base camp around Poe paddy, there are a lot of trails to explore. I plan on going back out and running Longwell draft to see how it is.

Very cool write up Jody. Sounds like you and the Mrs. had a nice day out. I'd definitely be interested in doing a run in this area as well. Trails like these can be just as fun and enjoyable as the OHV parks, and the price is right too!

Thanks for taking the time to give your impressions and provide a nice write up.

When are we going?????:D

Whatever you all are interested in doing I'm fine with. There are cabins and primitive sites at Poe Valley and Poe Paddy. Poe Valley is much larger and has a fairly large pond/lake for fishing. Poe Paddy has Penns Creek. They are about 9 miles apart. I think Andy had originally considered a 2 day venture. We could spend the first night in that area and then head north towards 80 if that's an option. It's $17 to camp and the cabins are fairly cheap as well.
I should mention that there are 2 improved routes (gravel) to get in and out easily if needed. Siglerville/Manheim pike make it easy to get out for the evening if you wish to head into State College.

I would suggest we camp the same place for 2 nights. I imagine a lot of folks will get in late on Friday and with larger family setups I think it would be easier/better to stay in one spot.

Selfishly, because these two weekends work for our crew, I'd like to suggest either May 16th or the 30th. That stays away from GSMTR and Memorial Day weekend and is still closeby and before school lets out.

Thoughts?

^^^ sure, but I may not see it there, taptalk check for updates at the end of the thread...
@joabmc thanks for the details, I feel you have just made this trip a reality.
Weekend of the 30th is still open for us.

I'm unable to make those weekends work. The 16th I'll be at the Northeasters run at RC. Memorial Day we'll be in Gettysburg for a tournament and the following weekend we'll be in Canada fishing. I only wanted to provide more information on the topic as this was the area that was originally discussed. I hope you all can still make it happen. I'm sure there will be more opportunities for me to attend.

TEAM! After chats yesterday it sounds like the 30th might be the best date.

Can we get a few more votes to confirm that weekend works?

So far I think myself, @mryanangel and @Pacer are in for that weekend.

What about everyone else? Can we get a decent sized group together?? I can probably find some time to go up and scout out one of the primitive sites in the area. Is everyone OK with one of the primitive sites? Poe Paddy is the nicer smaller park in my opinion but is pretty fulll that weekend and the group site is already reserved. Poe Valley has more sites available but is a pretty typical state park experience, i.e. sites close together, lots of RVs.

Let me know when you want to come up and I can take you on a tour. I'm very close.

Any other voters care to have their voices heard? Speak now or forever hold your piece!

@Pacer, @mryanangel, have you mapped out the Poe Paddy area? It looks like it'll be a decent drive for you guys on Friday, especially if you can't leave early enough to miss some traffic.

I checked with the forest service and a few of the camp spots are big enough to accommodate horse trailers and they suggested we choose one of those for our large group. There are also a few spots right next to or across from each other in the area so we can reserve 2 if needed.

My son has a MX race on the 17th so the 30th works better for me. However, I may be able to make Friday the 15th and some of Saturday 16th, if that's the date selected.

According to the Boss, my 2 m/o son is still too young for camping. I maybe out given I will have spent a lot of my wheeling quota going down to GSMTR.

Maybe this should be pushed to the Fall.
Morgan, Theo was 2.5mo when we camped in VT for the Rally Workshop in Oct last year. It was cold, but he did well.

The Poe Paddy family group tenting/camping area is available the weekend of the 16th:

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/poepaddy/

vault toilets, water, picnic tables and fire rings. It's only $30/night so pretty cheap split a few ways. We are also fine with a primitive spot and no facilities.

@Pacer, can you make the 16th?

@caz, @Crusha the 16th works for you guys?

Anyone else?
