F to diesel?

The tranny hump will be ok. The B use the same transmission, auto or manual but the input splines are different and the B may have the starter and clutch slave on the other side.

Depending on which engine you use the fuel lines, clutch lines ,exhaust and starter wiring may have to be swapped from one side to the other.
The H motor makes this easier as you can use your gearbox and I think every thing is on the same side.

I used the metal fuel and clutch lines from diesel cruisers. Most of the bolt holes were already drilled. This makes it look very factory:cool:
I got an electrician to lengthen the wiring so it would reach the starter on the other side and put a new relay in.
Going diesel really simplifies things as you no longer need the distributor or coil
The exhaust shop had a pattern book of all landcruiser exhaust and bent one to resemble the factory exhaust on a HZJ73.

As my cruiser formerly ran on unleaded petrol ,I had to put a fuel tube in from a diesel BJ70 as the old fuel tube had a restrictor so it could only take unleaded fuel. This shouldnt concern you.

The radiator shroud will also be different,Im guessing it would need to be off a BJ40 or HJ45 depending on the motor.

B engine will need the old mounts cut off and ne ones welded on,not such a big deal

250000 is ok if its been looked after but I would expect it at a lower price.Maybe some of the Canadians can give a better idea of local prices

Here is a pic of a 1984 army 45 engine bay with a 2H diesel which is what yours could look like :D This one also had a factory 5 sp:cool:

No the one above is one that I regret not buying, its an oz exarmy 45 one of 214 built for north west remote coastal surveillance by a volunteer force.

I have a 4.2 1HZ which I had rebuilt in my FJ73 which is still in productionin the 78/79/105 series. :D

I guess about $8.5K AUD
Engine rebuild $4800 inc new OEM cyl head
pump rebuild $1500
injectors $360
glow plugs $50
manifolds $200 for machine and blast
110 amp alternator new $320
starter rebuild $150(corroded solid)
flywheel machine$50
nuts bolts studs $200 I got new studs and bolts for everyone that wasnt perfect.
water pump OEM$130
clutch fan OEM $70
thermostat OEM$30
power steering pump shaft $110
radiator $280??
Im sure there is more plus a few special tools and a engine hoist:crybaby:
Only thing that wasnt touched was the vaccum pump

It started up like it just came off the assembly line and hasnt leaked, overheated or lost a drop of oil since last september.
It should be good for 500000+ klms with proper attention and care

ya...thats the one big thing about a diesel....it'll run forever if taken care of so it makes the re build a little bit less painless.

thanks

I've been meaning to get around to updating the website I had on my swap, but it's probably easier to go ahead and post the pictures and abbreviated details here on ih8mud. Let me see if I can get to it over the weekend.

that would be great, id love to see some more pics, as im sure would everybody else

the 3B would be a waste of your time, the "F" engine has very good power and the NA 3B is gutless by comparison. if you are yankng the "F" then go a 12HT for the easiest bolt up to your tranny or go with the 1HZ but you will need the tranny as well since the input shaft is uniqe to the HZ series.

the 3B needs a different imput shaft into the tranny as well.

Will the 1hz mate up to the transmission behind an F series engine? How do the engine mounts compare?

Engine mount brackets have to be moved foward about 50mm

just curious but wont my 40 then have pretty much the same power as the BJ4x's? i found a 3B that im going to look at on friday and have also located the needed tranny to do the swap i can get both for a very reasonable price (if they are in the same shape i have been told). my F engine does not by any strech of the imagination have "very good power" i think it might be a bit tired and i prefer diesel engines to gas any day. Im not looking for somthing thats gonna do 140km/h down the highway. the reason im opting for the diesel is personal preference and fuel economy. I have also looked into the 2H that would bolt strait onto my tranny but availability and cost are my 2 biggest issues with this engine. thanks for the advice

and.....will i need to change my tranny hump with a 3B tranny?

I'm not sure whic tranny comes with your F engine .. but H41 or H42 function for you with an 3B engine.

from what i have gathered the imput shaft is different in the 3B than in a F so i will have to change the tranny to acomidate the 3B but other than that i dont really know:doh: i am assuming that i have the stock tranny for a '74 FJ40...

yes it should be as slow as the BJ40...
if the price is right and you want it then go for it...
