In general, if you never go over ultimate tensile (and don't use heat), work hardening will cause steel to get harder, more brittle, and stronger. Adding heat to the process can do all kinds of interesting things depending on how much heat is applied and how it is cooled.

I seriously doubt that arm is made of anything other than mild steel. Bent once and straightened isn't going to affect it to any noticeable degree. Heating it isn't going to do anything to the strength of the steel either, as mild steel is already pretty weak as far as steels go, and isn't heat treatable. Looking at pictures of those arms, it appears that there is only about 3/4" of material on either side of the hole, which is not a lot. Seems the welded insert is not an optional component.

I'm not gonna pretend to be a metallurgist, so we'll see what happens once it's straightened out. Gonna send it to Booger who has access to a giant press so it shouldn't need any heat.

Anywho, I'm officially bumper-less now. Rear bumper is off to its new owner. After I fix the steering and finish the rocker shop / new sliders I'll get to work on the rear quarter chop and DIY rear bumper. Gonna roll with no swingouts and no spare tire. I'll be chopping the rear quarter where you see the green dotted line and will make a mini slider that attaches directly the frame. I may even trim the lower lip of the tailgate so the rear quarter chop lines up with the tailgate. We'll see. For now I just welded in a temporary cross member to make it driveable.

Gained about another 1/2" in height after removing the bumper. Got about 1/4" of clearance against the top of my garage. It's tight!

wow you really are going to chop a good chunk of them rear quarters!

Yeah trying to take it straight under that body line. If only it weren't for that rear body mount, it'd be a lot easier. It'll look something like this:

So what are you going to do with the spare and all the other junk you had on the rear bumper?

I'm in the process of cutting this today, looks more complicated than it is, just start cuttin

Better post some pics!

So what are you going to do with the spare and all the other junk you had on the rear bumper?

Well I'll have to make a few sacrifices for the short term as what I want involves my long term vision. Since I plan on chopping the rear half of the roof, upper tailgate will be gone obviously. So that means I could use my 4x4Labs interior cargo rack to hold a can of fuel and water. Also thinking of doing away with the lower tailgate and incorporating a swing out or swing down tire carrier to serve as a tailgate, all tied into the roll cage similar to this pic below. I'd tuck the tire in a bit more so it won't stick out as much, but you get the idea:

I'll be plugging that hole if you so desire. You won't even know it was there...

Cuttings done going to seal it up this morning and lost some pics, 2 hours with a sawsall and disc cutter and she's all shaved off, I left about and inch below the body line where is cuts under to run my tube around in the notch
Pics sir please

Wow nice work.

Holler at that baller!!!

sorry to bring up an OLD part of the thread. I am going to trim out my core support / inner fender much like you did on page 57 of this epic thread. Wondering if you welded in a plate from the cut core support to the inner fender or how you finished this off?

Thanks,

Ummmm I was there for this pic and it's not exactly how I remember it...
