Did you reshim the valves while the cover was off?
Yes, unlike the 12 valve 1HD-T, the 24 valve uses more contemporary adjustable tappets instead of shims to set the valves correctly. My wife and I set the valves this afternoon because the settings are for a COLD engine.

It's looking pretty darn good ;) I think my wife understands why all the detail work matters at this point. Cleaning all this stuff meticulously is a pain but assembly is a breeze. The con rod (BEB) bearings should be here mid-week. After getting those swapped, I'll stab the transmission onto this beast and hopefully get in in the truck!!

I forget to add this pic with P/N's

I'm missing two small bolts, they're on backorder

It's Dupli-color paint which is heat resistant to 500 degrees or so. As long as the surface is clean and prepped, it works great. I used it on my Vortec swap 11 years ago and so far so good

Looks dynamite! Nice refurb!

Looks awesome! I was contemplating polishing the valve cover, but i thinks this looks better.
Thanks for all the part numbers! I'm taking notes ;)

Btw. Did you replace the injectors or where they in good shape?

Thanks :) Replacing the injectors was the one thing I decided not to do. For one, it's not cheap and this project is ridiculously over budget at this point. If there's issues once this thing is running, I'll have to address them then. At least replacing or having them cleaned/balanced is fairly straightforward. The last thing that really needs to be done is the BEB's before this goes in the truck. Hopefully they will arrive end of this week.

A couple more P/N pics

Yes, the alternator looks gross compared to everything else but it'll have to do. Cleaning it much further without taking the whole thing apart would be fairly impossible.

I'm currently missing the AC mount and the AC compressor for this engine. I'm hoping to get those parts and a few other things from the UK in the future.

Holy crap that looks so much better!

Did you put the stick shifter in for fun as a teaser for the interior or is the tranny in already??

Nick, I'm just teasing. I set the console and shifter I'm place to prove to my wife that driving/shifting this truck will not be like operating a semi-truck. She was not super hot on the 5 speed deal so I've got to sell it :)

By the way, I'm still missing the rear bracket that holds the console box in place, do you know where to get one?

I'm also planning on trying to stab the engine and transmission into the truck already assembled together. Anyone know if this is possible? I'd like to avoid wrestling the heavy 5 speed into place while under the truck on my back

I pulled my 1FZ out of my LX with trans and Tcase still attached. I also pulled the 1HDT/H151 and Tcase out of my HDJ81 in one piece as well. 2 Ton engine hoist on the 1.5 ton arm legnth.

With front clip removed and hood off there was no drama, an engine leveler is a HUGE assest. Its a heavy bitch but doable. I pulled the 1FZ by myself with no help and managed.

Sweet, that's very helpful, thanks

Ha, it won't feel like a semi-truck per say but it'll definitely feel very chunky and truck like. The H151F from the 80 series feels somewhat like an older tranny while the 100 series H151F feels so much more refined, like a 4runner 5 speed. With that being said, still WAY better than the auto.

I modified my auto shifter assembly which has the bracket on it. I ground off all the other brackets and tabs, and utilized the existing capture nuts to bolt it down. I screwed up initially, as my thread shows, by cutting off just the bracket part. Keep the whole thing and use it to bolt your rubber shifter insulator boot to as well!

Also, 100% put the tranny in with the motor. It sucks suck SUCKS putting the trans in on the floor. It took 3 guys @danakittilsen @TeeDiggs and me, along with plenty of profanity and at the end a giant 2 by 4 through the sun roof to put my trans in. Not fun.

The 5spd is way better than the auto. But I drive an 18spd for work, and the h151 in my early model 80 does harken back to driving a semi truck. But to me that makes it all the more enjoyable. One truly does not know how to drive until you have to 18 gear's to manage a 49' long 25 ton truck, on or off-road.

With a hoist and a tall transmission jack, @gnarlynick2072 and I got the gear under my truck in less than 45 mins. But whatever you do, don't do it on the floor!

Great job on the freshen up! It only gets better from here on out.
