Please excuse my ignorance but why do all of the 1HZ engine swaps also swap the to a manual transmission. I'm considering doing a swap as well but would like to keep the automatic transmission so I would have to swap in a 1994 FJ80 A440F tranny into it and remove the A343F . I found an automatic transmission housing mating the 1HZ or 1HD-T to the A440F automatic transmission.

Thanks all :) That clears up my question and doing the connecting rod bearings will be WAY easier then the main bearings.

As for the stand, my buddy and I did as described above and we left the hoist attached as we rotated the engine so it didn't get away from us. That block/head assembly are ridiculously heavy and mis-weighted.

I'll get a set of Taiho's on order this week, anybody have a recommendation on a USA supplier?

Thanks again

This is going well, a note about the mention of draining the oil. When the engine is the right way up and oil filter and sump are removed you think all the oil would be out, this is not the case, it is only when you remove the strainer that that about another cup full of oil comes out, all over the poor mechanic. I would suggest that if you a really keen on getting all the oil out I would remove the strainer and then set the engine the right way up for ten minutes whilst you have a cuppa.

If you cannot get the bearings you mention then ACL do a set that are manufactured to be right on target for the standard crank journals, not expensive but apparently bloody good. I too was going to change the mains but as the engine was in the car and you need to split the crankcase I did not bother.

Keep up the good work,

regards

Dave

OK, I just ordered these Taiho bearings from Austrailia: EB8396B600T They are on their way (shipped to USA) for just under $100, not bad. It turns out I can get the 12 connecting rod bolts, 13265-17010 domestically so I'll order them this week at some point ;)

Dave, I didn't know that was the case, strange. To my surprise, the sump and strainer were very clean when I removed the sump pan. There was no sludge, metal particles or anything amiss in the very bottom of it. For now, my plan is just to leave the strainer in place and work around it. With the engine out of the truck, that shouldn't be a problem.

I think it is intentional, when the engine is started there is already oil held in the gallery leading to the oil pump, or it is the action of the 'finger over the straw full of milk', you move your finger and it all comes out at once.

This has caught many who have drained the oil the night before and removed the oil filter, the following morning they remove the sump (a mission in it's own right due to the FIPG), there are no oil drips and they start work, all goes well but IIRC the strained was in the way of one of the BEB bolts, well on my HD-T it was, I released the strainer and previous experience with other engines meant I was careful, sure enough out came the oil!

Also make sure your torque wrench is good before tightening, mine failed halfway through, I was tightening and thinking that this is way too much load and I stopped, if I did not have the experience I would have kept going, I grabbed another wrench and finished the job.

For me it's just personal preference as I'd rather drive a manual trans over an auto any day. Also, LHD Toyota turbo diesels with 5 speed manual transmissions are quite rare in North America. Re-sale (if I ever sell it) will be WAY more compared to an auto truck.

Add to that that the benefits of a manual far out weigh those of an auto.....don't start me off :D

Early Christmas from the UAE..... Shipping took only 3 working days; quicker than mailing a letter to a neighboring state in the USA.

These are in slightly better shape than the originals :grinpimp:

Unfortunately I just got word from the Ebay seller that the Taiho bearings are all backordered and they have no idea how long the wait will be. Anybody have a source for these? The PartsDude site also is not accepting Paypal currently so I can't order from there either :bang:

I got my bearings from Radd Cruisers, in Duncan BC. Or try ATEB in Burnaby.

Just called Radd Cruisers, they have several sets in stock, thanks

Do you have a parts list of what you all replaced? I have an identical greasy 1HDFT from the UK which will be powering my 45 in the future. I did make a list myself, but curious if i missed something.

I most certainly do, my plan is to post pics as this goes back together along with all the corresponding P/N's that I used. I can also send you (or post up here) my entire list which is long and boring. Sometimes without a picture though, the P/N name can be rather confusing.

I'd think posting the list could benefit more users than myself. I'm in no hurry, so i'll keep following this thread.

Thanks!

More to follow ;)

That is possibly the nicest looking parts list I've ever seen.

Happy to be of help, I hope others find this thread useful in the future. Especially as more of these engines make their way to the USA

I think I finally have it timed correctly, what a huge PITA! I made the same mistake that was done here: Help Needed: 1HDFT Injection Pump install, Timing Gears, BDC vs TDC The injection pump shaft (with the keyway) moved when I removed it apparently. The timing was close but not right, I believe it's correct now according to the 3 TDC marks.

Sometimes your life serves as a warning to others. DON'T neglect to mark the injection pump timing gear if you take one of these apart!

Going back together......
