Engine temp

If I want to check if my water temp gage is ready correct on my dash can I double check somehow? I have a direct temp laser could I shoot the engine block with that? What temp would you expect I should read after running engine

If you have a laser temp point at the hoses to and from radiator
the temp depends on your thermostat. Mine is 180 I believe for a Jan 1980
