There are a few folks that install electric power steering. I think City Racer sells a kit. You can try to search on the internet and click on anything that references this site or try the search function here.

To all- I have a 1968 FJ40. I’m looking to install electric power assist steering. Has anyone had any experience with this type of steering system?
Thanks
I’ve got it on our BJ45 and liked it so much we bought it for our 40 project. It’s same kit city racer sells. Adjustable gain for feedback. It has gotten more expensive for sure but I would buy again.

Easy if are planning to ditch the column shift or have already done so. Easiest path is probably going to be to get a newer manual steering box & column components to use the City Racer kit. Your box and steering shaft is a 1 piece design. You can retrofit EPS into your current steering components, but you're going to need to do all the fab work to cut the column & shaft and attach to the EPS unit (or pay someone to do it). It's been done, but was reported that it would be much easier and straight forward to buy the newer components and use the kit.

Note your steering column & wheel hub is 36 splines if it is original, which is a rare steering wheel compared to the 33 spline wheels installed in 40 series and many other vehicles. The 36 to 33 spline switch was in 7/69 for the FJ40 series.

The city racer kit is definitely the easiest way to go if you don’t mind upgrading to the later steering column and steering wheel.

If you like a challenge, the ezsteering parts can be adapted to your existing column but you’ll probably lose the column shift.

Believe there more difficulty doing it on a pre 9/73 that the steering column goes directly into the steering box. The mounting opening in the dash is different as well.
Definitely, almost double the labor time.

Yes sir. Installed on a 76 by RCLC / @Jdc1 via City Racer. 100% recommend the upgrade. There are however screening criteria I would consider. If you are into any “serious” off road wheeling/rock crawling, you may want to steer away (pun intended) from the EPS. I’m back east and my driving scenarios are very different from yours in Cali. I think you have parking lots bigger than the city I live next to..

I’m running 285-75/16 Falkan tires. W/EPS it’s a one finger spin in driveway/parking lot situations. Two/four lane driving it’s almost too easy. When I’m on the highway I turn the system down to the lowest setting YMMV.

After installation, If for some reason you loose the electric motor, your steering reverts back to factory manual.

It’s a very good alternative vice traditional mods for PS.
