Many cheapo units do not have bluetooth OR the bluetooth stack/driver etc to support a bluetooth GPS. Ditto for an appropriate USB stack/driver to support a USB GPS.

Unless someone has specifically stated that they have successfully used a GPS with an xyz tablet, I'd be wary of throwing my money away...

Also, make sure that the tablet you choose is visible in strong sunlight (even if in vehicle) AND that a 12V charger is available AND that the touch screen is useable. Many cheap tablets have resistive screens that can be quite frustrating to use.

My ASSumption is that the tablet in your link would more than likely NOT operate for navigation purposes.

cheers,
george.

I've been wanting a bigger screen for in cab gps options, my Garmin 60cxs is great, just too **** small to see while driving.

Any idea if something like this cheap piece o '**** might work with a gps antenna and some mapping software thrown on it?

I share your feelings.

Ok, I would avoid those cheapy tablets, doubt they will work as you wish and waste the $$. I considered going for an old laptop running XP, the 60 series works good. However in the end I just purchased a nuvi 205W.

If you really want a tablet go for one running XP or even Win 7 and you can use the Garmin connection cable in the USB. Use the Garmin MapSource and you are rolling, or even MapEdit.

I have a tablet now, running android, Samsung Galaxy Tab. Going to see if can use my 60 on it.

who makes the leading non apple tablets....someting similar to an IPAD...

Any good model to look at? At a price point that's not beyond teh IPAD device.

I've never had a tablet computer but have built a number of windows 7, XP and older desktops. I know windows 7 likes plenty of ram and CPU power...

All major top pc brands have tablets now.

yes...but I'm sure some of the tablets are better than others.

Some of the top android tablet manufactuters would be Acer, Asus, Motorola, Samsung and Toshiba. Almost all will be cheaper than an un-subsidized iPad.

I have a Motorola XOOM. I really like it... it's one of the few with a built in GPS antenna. 10 hr battery life, 10" screen, hdmi out, etc. They have some good software for offroad driving.

I am pretty happy with my Acer Iconia A500. It has GPS, bluetooth, wifi, capacitive touch screen, they can be had for about $300 now (I think) as they are getting ready to release an updated model soon. There are several offline (no data plan required, maps stored in memory) GPS android apps available, but I don't have any personal experience using them.

I like the apple IpadII, but I've always been a windows idiot since day one (excluding back in the caveman times when I had one of the first MAC's ...Macintosh). I'm looking around among the various tablets (non-apple) which mostly appear to be driven by the android OS.

One of the issues to me is the lack of a USB port on the apple device. I realize you can't be the thinnest, and cooletst looking device and most likely the lightest without giving up some features. I do suspect that the apple functions well and is easy to use and does so without issue, all of which may lead me down the apple path anyway.

I do know weight and size are certainly a factor when you start talking about mounting the device for car use, and obviously functionality and software support are critical.

I know this post was about cheaper units...

But....what do people think about the Toshiba Thrive Android Tablet, it seems to have a selection of ports and has built in GPS? I'm sure there are some tradeoffs with support for software (navigation software)... appple os vs. windows vs. android.
