Nope. SBC swap planning. Leaning strongly towards th400/np205. Conservative numbers 300/370 ft/lbs

So. What's the point of this thread,? Maybe you could be a little more vague.

Chevy eng/trans swap plans, would prefer to spend money on a stronger rear axle than on a tcase adapter. So I was thinking about building a 9” and running a 205 or 241c with sye

Is this for your 78 40?

The weak links on an FJ40 is the stk 1 piece offset rear output tcase and the birfields. The Ford 9" might be stronger than the 40's 9 1/2" ring gear with a coarse spline pinion shaft. Your 78 40 might have a fine spline pinion which builds strength. Your 300hp sbc is a little hotter than stock sbc. You'll be limited in gear reduction with the np205 and it might be overkill depending on your use and tire size. The driveline length might be an issue too. If your tires are really tall then you'll want lower gearing. You might want to consider a Dana 300, they have a 2.62 low range and gear driven. They offer lower gears for them and you can upgrade the internals if necessary. Both will be center rear output.

I run a sbc/sm420/dana 20 case with 2.46 low range, and I centered the 40's rearend. It has a Detroit Locker and 4.88's.

It's probably cheaper to center the 40's rear than buying Ford 9". Then you can spend the money you saved on a tcase adapter. It looks like Novak has a short one for a dana 300 and th400. The tcase can be altered for a true twin stick. One stick is for the rear axle and the other is for the front.

Running a sbc offers a bunch of different driveline options.

Uses 50mm inner diameter bearings (Ref. #32010-JRYA1). In Toyota Land Cruiser applications, only fits models with non-C-clip axle designs (non-USA model).:zilla:
Wait… you can put a 9” third member in a lc axle housing? Maybe I do want to buy that 70 series full float housing…

I apologize for vaugebooking while in a relaxed state. You have opened my eyes once again. The link for outer swap blew my mind. There is a guy local that has a Dana 300 with the 4 to 1 and all the goodies… but he is proud of it.

If it was built during 1978 and not before it should have have a fine spline pinion.

If you are not talking about a 70 series full floater with disc brakes and talking used not sure the advantage of the 70 series full floater over the 40 series. If 8/80 and newer those share everything from the backing plate out with 60 and 70 series. Spring perches are already where they need to be.
