Saw a nice white 88 4runner yesterday by Madison malco. Missed seeing driver but it was nice. Who is it? White, no graphics, 2-3 in lift.

No movement on H.D. today because the 4runner needed a new CAT, so I started that process....

Aparently you have to disassemble the whole truck to get the flipping thing out... Well you have to drop the trans cross-member, which isn't that big a deal, just a PITA.

Anyway, started putting it back together and broke the end off one of the studs. Fawk! I also noticed a couple of the bolts are gauled and I don't have a 10x1.25 rethreader, so I'm on hold for a day or 2...

Good on ya for replacing the cat. The PO of mine took mine off and welded a straight pipe through where it once was

Got to have one around here to get tags. I been having some odd starting issues and I've about narrowed it down to a clogged cat. Bought a Bosal replacement to see if that takes care of the issues, if so then I'll see about getting a OEM, just couldn't stomach $1500 for an OE unit and hope it was the culprit. Much easier to throw a buck fifty at it and see if it helps.

I think it will as when I tried looking thru the old unit I could barely see any light, New one I can see the bend so we shall see. Getting thread chase ordered and hunting for hardware. Will probably hit the local parts counter tomorrow on the way home and point at the screen and say that one, I need that one right there....

Holy crap $1500 for an oem? Just curious, why not go with a hi flow cat like a magnaflo or something?

The 3rd gens (may be true for all) seem to be rather picky about CATs. See a lot that start throwing codes again after only 6 months to a year after install. I won't argue that there is more catalyst in the OEM unit, but it is not 10 times as much.

I am going to run with it for now and see how it goes.

Ah I understand. I'm used to having my o2 sensor before the cat assembly. Never seen one on a 3rd gen

@jynx Did that new cat come pre-welded with the o2 bung and flanges? I need to redo the exhaust on my 62 and the stock 2 bolt o2 bungs are rusted and need to be replaced. Was hoping you might now a place to source new o2 bungs?

Mine were prewelded in, just needed to reuse the nuts. If you need to redo it all, you might check rockauto and see if you can buy the pieces. I could get almost the entire replacement system from Bosal from there.

Researched the interwebs and coming here for confirmation.

1987 4Runner 22RE Automatic
Currently stock 4.10s(?) on 31x10.50s

Good/plug-and-play swap would be 4.88 thirds (code G144) from any V6 4Runner/Truck (with G144 code) through 1995...yes?

Si The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit.
- The carrier (case) is the same as the V6 diffs, so normal V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. will work in this diff

Your 87 auto 4Runner had 4.30s from the factory. You have a few options, you can swap to a manual, and keep the 4.30s and be fine to run up to 33s. (My setup now). Or you could find a 4.88 third like you said. You can do a little more digging and find some 4.30 Elocker thirds, do some modification to the housing and have a selectable locker. Then if you run bigger tires you can re gear opposed to the factory 4.88 third. With the auto if you do 33s or higher, you're going to want 5.29s. The auto in my 87 dogged my 4Runner out so badly with 33s. No power and shift points were all off. When I swapped in the manual it was like driving a new truck. I do 75 on the freeway at around 3200 RPM. I'm going to 5.29s and 35s personally
