22r's mostly ended in 84 but a few were produced up to about 87 I believe. Solid axle thru 85 then IFS. 85 is generally the most desirable as it has (usually) the 22re and the solid front axle

The 22re went thru 95. I think most of the IFS 1st gen 4runners will be 22re rigs. 88 was the first year of the 3.0. 87 was the only year the 22re turbo was available. 86 or 87 will def be 4cyl, 88 you will have to verify. I've heard the 85 EFI system is just a little different than the later versions, but don't know exactly what.

Based off this I want an 87. http://www.top4runners.com/runhist/runhist11988.html

Reasons: last year of vents on front windows, last year of EFI 22-r 4cylinder, has SR5 and color options I like. 2 segment grille started and some had a turbo (added bonus if I found one)

I want IFS and auto tranny as this is a town rig and I want the wife to be able to drive it. Light trails, light trailer duty and it may be a DD from time to time. Only mods would possibly include 2in lift on old suspension and soft top.

Color options in order:
Silver, light blue, white, red, black
Interior Will NOT be red!!!

I'm starting to watch the market closely but am in no hurry. (Prefer a $7k cherry to a $2500 basket case)

Worst rust appears to be rear fender wells and bumpers front and back.

And the 3.0 trucks are more easily swapped to 3.4 in the future.

Agree on both..... Im well versed. Ive had a 94 and 2 95s with the 3-slow.

Prefer 22 re for mileage. Not a deal breaker.

I've seen 3.0s blow head gaskets parked in a parking lot. Just saying. I have bought, fixed up and sold quite a few and have only had one 3.0. Too much crap to go wrong to flip.
