So this is going to sound odd but has anyone thought about swapping the A343F for an AW4 and then you would have your option of just about any jeep TC. The A343F and AW4 are the same family.

That's and interesting note. I had a friend that had a 4Runner truggie that used the jeep trans. Completely forgot about it. Question is will it bolt to a 1fZ

It will more than likely bolt to the bell housing that bolts to the 1FZ. For most intents and purposes the AW4 and A340 series are very similar. The A343F has a very different tail section to mate up to the Toyota trans.

Like I said the AW4 and A340 series that he probably had in his 4runner are very similar. I have done more reading than I care to admit on the A343F transmission and it is an evolution from an Aisin Warner conglomerate. In some ways I have almost convinced myself it is a step down in strength from the A440/442's. But even though it is rated for less torque than the A750F, it has more clutch packs and my gut feeling says it is stronger.

In order from beef to weak I would have to go A440/442 > A343F > A750.

The a343 is marginally smaller than the a442. Just out of curiosity why in your opinion is it stronger?

It's not marginally smaller it's substantial smaller. Toyota lists them at 155lbs and 240lbs respectively.
But here is where it gets tricky.

You can take the A343F and increase the clamping force with a valve body and considering better Alto red friction clutches and upgraded steels. I could not find a source to do this for the A442. Additionally there is a billet sprag set for the A343F that ATF Speed does for the A340 series.

So in Stock form my money is on the A442 being a stronger unit because of its larger components but if you take the time and money to build an A343F - $2700 from ATF Speed I put my money on it.

A mud member here Don machines does some machining which adds more clutches and steels to the a442 and does machining to the vb for increased line pressure too. Good idea on using pieces from the a340. All we need are billet upgraded converters :)

Yes very off topic. Sorry guys. It just came to me the other night that the AW4 has gearing options for the transfer case, either a Dana 300 to New Process doubler or a 4 speed Atlas and that transmission would likely accept the Toyota bell housing. Just wanted to throw that out there for those that want gearing.

Getting a little off topic, but Extreme Automatics in Australia has a number of upgrades available for the A442f including clutches.

They are way over priced...honestly your better off keeping the stock clutches just adding more. I have a buddy who builds trans for diesel tractor pulls. Says the red altos shred but the stock clutches stay in one piece.

I think they're similar internals but will not bolt up to the 1FZ.
