Another idea would be to scale up the classic boy scout plastic sheet still and place it over a big pan of water. Instead of digging a pit, use a framework to hold up the plastic. The top surface of the plastic could be formed into allot of ridges and troths using rods. From the side it would look like a whole bunch of Vs strung together. Under the bottoms of the Vs troths can be placed to collect the drips. Those troths can then direct the water to the catch jug.

Couragated fiberglass panels?

Couragated fiberglass panels?
Possibly if you sloped them down enough that the condensation that forms under the top rolls down to an end. I was thinking clear plastic sheeting with roughly a foot or two between the peaks, and 6" to a foot between the peaks and the troths.

The translucent fiberglass corrugated panels come in 3'x8' sections. I'm thinking a simple shed structure using 4' lengths, oriented to maximize exposure to the sun. A trough at the bottom would catch the condensation and direct it into a storage container.

You could use the same structure to harvest rain water,. snow or dew doubling it's utility.

You can get clear panels made for greenhouse use.

I am very impressed with my big berkey for drinking water... I'm on well water with higher then normal sodium and heavy metal levels and also at times some viruses... Since getting the berkey I no longer have to lug jugs of water around... In the event we can no longer pump water out of the ground we have a big in ground pool that the berkey can filter into drinking water... 1 berkey filter is rated to clean 3000 gallons of water... Tastes better then bottled water, is easier and cheaper by far in the long run... I did a lot of research before buying mine and if ur on a budget you could get away with buying the black filters and making your own housing from food grade buckets or SS...

Cheers

Come dooms day, what do you do when you run out of filters and UV light bulbs?

Much better to design and use a system that doesn't need any fancy stuff to operate. To a degree, even glass and metal can be considered fancy. Eventually the glass will break, and the metal corrode away.

I've heard very good things about Berkey many times. I think it's good to be prepared for short and long term as far as different ways to purify or get water.

Is boiling water now old school?

Still works AFAIK. However, a solar still would be more efficient and would desalinate water if you lived near the ocean.

Fresnel lens off of an old projection TV. Makes water boil wicked fast. And can easily be found in old projection TV's

I have one of the little ones from him as well. Awesome. But if I were making a big still, the large lens is a better option.

I just bought two of his lenses. Has anybody built a frame for their's, something like in the video. Let's see your ideas for these.
