Our dog, (Hudson) is a "power chewer", not on things we don't want him to chew on, but on his bones. We got him a bone filled with peanut butter, and one filled with maple bacon, which he loved. He actually cracked one in half with his jaws!!

I've been told not to give him rawhide unless it's granulated or pressed. Greenies I'm told are also a "no-no." I got him some cow hooves, but he breaks them up and I don't think that's good for his digestive system, as stated on some websites I've searched. Haven't got him any pig's ears yet, are those okay??

We just feed him dry dog food, (lamb & rice) and then a Milkbone after breakfast and dinner, "no people food."

Any treats that I can give him and not have to worry about? Thanks!

That tennis ball he is chewing on is much worse than anything you mentioned feeding him as a snack. I had a 90lb chocolate lab that bit a tennis ball in two. Half of it somehow lodged in his intestinal tract sidways. $800.00 later he was fine. I went out and bought him a couple of the biggest rawhide bones and a cow leg bone. Once he realized that they were his and that he could have them anytime, he quit eating them overnight.

I found the flavored ones they just eat faster.

Same here. I'm interested to hear what people say. I have a 17 pound Dachsund that is absolutely voracious when it comes to toys/treats. He has bitten the last few red Kongs clean in two. The black one for dogs three times his size has lasted a little longer.

He LOVES grapes, which we only give to him once in a while during the summer. He also really likes carrots. No "issues" with either, so they don't seem to bother him. The freeze-dried liver pieces are his favorite.

My lab will do anything for a frozen grape or the a$$ end of a banana. She will come from where ever she is sleeping when you "pop" the top of a banana and will growl in a low tone till she gets the end. She loves all vegies, I boil bulk carrots in chicken and supliment her food often to thin her down. Off the subject but I also ad white rice to that mixture and she loves it. Dogs cannont digest rice and it scraped the intestional wall.

My healer hates anything in the raw, but has a thing for tomatoes.

O ya, Ice cubes. My dogs come running when they hear one drop from the ise maker.

Buy him some pig ears from Costco. $20 will get you a bag of around 25. They love them and they're loaded with protein, good for the coat, etc. I have a choclate and a yellow (both females), and they love these things. Vet approves.

Hudson looks pretty healthy, so obviously he isn't starving. I would let him play with a tennis ball, just don't let it get old and worn out before you replace it. I change them out when the knapp wears down.

Look at orvis.com for a rooster squeaky toy. Hudson will make it his best friend, and it will calm him down. They are a proven security blanket for labs, time tested, etc. Mine sleep with theirs, and carry them on trips, etc.

Last, but not least, if he isn't cut, that will help calm him down a bit.

Good Luck!

Our 3 love peanuts. There like circus seals lined up all perfect when they see me with the nuts. Also we have bought kongs. Fill them with peanutbutter. Pigs ears are good. One of ours decided to grab a choc bar from the counter one morning while my wife was in the shower so when she got out, she saw the wrapper on the floor and freaked out cause as you know choc is BAD. So she had to pour hydorgen peroxide down all three throats to induce vommiting.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Found the guilty party. Our fat one:D

Ours dogs love veggies as well...but I remember when my wife used to feed them grapes and we mentioned it to the Vet and she said absolutely NOT!!

Read here about grapes and dogs

Just going by what the vet said...

As far as chew toys, I second getting one of the large bones and letting him chew on it over a long period. Maybe he'll relax.

We only give them frozen carrots, bananas, dog biscuits, and the good dog food. No "people food" for us either.

Cheers

I have a big german shephard that will eat most chew toys.
So what I have ended up learning is good for chewing:
go to lowes or HD and buy a few feet of cotton rope (much cheaper than PetSmart rope)
NylaBones- the opaque ones (liver & chicken) these last forever
Sticks, logs in the yard.
Everything else has been a problem.

We give our dogs (a heeler mix and a mini dachshund) the compressed chew bones (and take them away after a few minutes, and Nylabones.

Their interest in Nylabones seems to wax and wane. They'll chew on it for a day or two, then forget about it for weeks. Then once one of them "finds" its, it's new again.

For treats, we give them those freeze-dried chicken breasts from Costco.

They also used to get the occasional raw bone (pork or beef). But now that we live in apartment, we can't let them outside to chew on them. So they are off limits until we have a yard again.

That's a good point about not eating them in one night, he does that!! Thanks! For some reason he goes easy on tennis balls.

get him a big KONG and put something in it for him... it will keep him busy for hours. My choco lab will eat anything in minutes (except the Kong) and ignores beef bones.

I have a lab that's a major chewer. I was trying to figure out what would work, tried the peanut butter filled kong, raw hides, etc.

I finally resorted to my local butcher block and picked up huge bone marrow bones. The bones keep the dogs occupied all day. Sometimes they don't even want to come indoors becasue they're enjoying themselves so much.

Just on the Milkbone thing...

We have a Golden Retriever with a sensitive stomach, and her skin apparently doesn't get along with Milkbones. It makes her itchy and she bites at her paws all day. She's on Nuro Dental formula (lamb & rice) and we switched her treats to Nutro's Lamb & Rice large breed treats as it is the same formulation as her regular food. She no longer has the itching problem.

Handsome dog, by the way...

Redbarn Bully Sticks

We have a miniture dachshund and an Aussie mix and they both love Redbarn Bully sticks. They are made from cow tendon, not penis. We made a mistake and brought home one of the other bully sticks made from bull schlong and the house reeked until we could get it away from the dog! The Redbarn ones are more expensive (~$2.00 for a 5"), but do not stink like the others.

x2 on the rooster. Tucker loves it. He normally amputates his animals, starting with eyeballs, noses, appendages, squeekers...but the rooster is holding up.
