From the Chatham Co Historical Society:

"WS Durham, Siler City's largest wholesale dealer in rabbits placed ads in the local newspapers enticing boys to trap rabbits and bring them to him. The season ran Nov 1 to Feb 1 when the cold weather provided natural refrigeration for the shipments.

Dealers obtained most of their rabbits from rural boys who caught them in traps (rabbit boxes or rabbit gums). Authentic rabbit gums are among the many interesting artifacts of Chatham County history that you will find in the Chatham Historical Museum. Visit and discover the treasures of Chatham's past."
