I said ****it and splurged on a new rubber gasket for underneath the windshield frame. Figured I'll probably be putting the hard top on for this winter.

Maybe with doors that don't rattle I'll hate it less.

Allegedly this is genuine Toyota, but who the hell knows.

Did find it interesting that there's a bead of black goop (butyl?) under it.

I've always put a bead of something under them anyway. Apparently Mr T approves. :meh:

Rubber feels thinner between the ridges than others I've had, but maybe that's how they are now. It would increase the pressure on the raised bits if it wasn't all the same height I guess.

Anyways, maybe it won't drip on my foot after I use the windshield squirter now 🤣

Been a while. Did some s***.

Most importantly, built another guitar, and went full Les Potato this time. Probably going to refinish it in the summer, my first ever attempt at a burst with nitrocellulose lacquer, and the weather in December is not great for that stuff.

Then a combination of boredom and peer pressure got me into an intercooler. Which caused a bit of a snowball effect when I pulled the aluminum rad and saw weepiness.

Yay.

Bj rads are pretty much hens teeth at this point, so I found one that was close. Allegedly 70s Hilux, but it's the same dimensions as a 40 rad, 3 row, and lower hose fitting is in the right spot.

Nippon Denso even.

Fits pretty well, just had to drill new mounting holes in the support. Worked out ok, because I put the IC inside the support. I figured there's zero chance I'll ever have a proper bj rad again, it'll be some industrial one if this doesn't last.

Managed to find a goofy upper hose on lordco's wall of hoses that fits just about perfectly. Be nice to move the fitting across, but for a 100 buck solution compared to over 1k for a brass 42 rad, I can live with it I think..

That boost pipe is pretty ghetto so I'll redo it at some point. But for now , it works. Best I could do with the junk on hand .

I built a stainless exhaust for the truck as well, so I might have enough of that left over.

So far a couple cedar hot laps and no puddles or extra clanks, so maybe I'll trust it to drive a little further today 🤣

Is that the body you had in the shop last month that looked like layers of laminated wood? Very cool. My friend in
Vancouver is making a pour in molded Gibson copy for his kids high school project. Nice when dad helps, I guess.
Not sure where he is on development, I'll send a couple of pics when done.
Do you have any measurable data on benefits of intercooler? Or does it just run and doesn't overheat for now.

I think I was doing the routing to carve the top then. Like contour lines of a map, gets you in the ballpark of the right shape.

On my old 45 when I added the IC, it dropped the egts enough I could turn the fuel up quite a bit more.
I could set the red warning light off on my pyro pretty easily on this before, (alarm set at 1150 I think) so the hope is it'll be a little cooler at the same fuel setting now. We'll see. College Hill is where I'll notice it. So far I've only ripped around cedar and it's pretty flat.

Built a new driveshaft.

Old one spun pretty true, but it looked hideous and was kindof embarrassing when a weird number of dudes look under my truck.

I used the soft porn/dating app focus for this pic.

Pretty wild how much you can change how straight they run just by heating a spot AFTER the ends are welded on. If I put a torch on it 3" away from that dial gauge, it'll move 30 thousandths by the time the spot glows red. Then when it cools, it shrinks down and is no longer the high spot, rinse repeat (literally lol ).

In the end I think I'm within 5 thou which is pretty good. They say you want it within 2 at the slip end, but I had to estimate a bit because there's no nice machined place to run the dial gauge. Tube probably isn't round so ya kinda have to use the force.

It felt fine at 90kph, I think a bit smoother than the old one, but that could just be me knowing it doesn't look like s***, and is therefore better ....

Plus there's so much other crap vibrating at that speed in a diesel 40 who tf knows

Congratulations…

Now you won’t feel so embarrassed when guys are checking out your shaft. ;)

It's usually the experts saying "these things all have rotten frames" . Actually caught one guy hitting my frame with something as I walked back to the truck.

Wtf dude?

Although my personal favourite to this point is still, " You don't see them with the original box very often"

I've come to enjoy just letting people be wrong.

It’s very likely he has never seen one with an original box if he thought your’s was an original. I mean it is original… as in one of a kind… but certainly not OEM Toyota. Functional yes… OEM no.

Thats my point lol

Guy talked like he was the biggest expert on old Toyota's to ever walk the earth.

Didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. 🤣

I like when guys say "my buddy had one brand new from Toyota with a factory V8". Well no that was a mod. "Swear to God he got it from the factory with a V8, right from Toyota". Ya ok. I guess that was a Toyota option...

Nice work on the shaft. We should have a beer when I get home.

Haha, yeah parking lot experts are something.

I channel the Keanu these days. "2+2=5? You're right have fun, see you later"

Unless it's a rover guy. Fawk those pommie bastards

Sounds good on the beer. 👍

From what I've read some dealerships had V8s Swapped into them new and then sold them as V8 powered. A far cry from being a "factory V8"... but possibly bought new from a Toyota Dealer with a V8 in it after the dealer swapped one in. Of course I've read this a few times, but wasn't there to see it first hand.

Ah, refreshing to see someone doing something with those things these days! Rear brakes are seized on mine from sitting so long!
Ha, on nice days we're both off, Mel pretty much demands we take the cruiser out for a burn somewhere to get lunch.

Had a few drives home where you're hoping the light doesn't change so you get soaked 🤣

This rad I'm using had a very minimalist shroud on it, which was convenient for fitting but didn't really work worth a s***. Actually had no shrouding at all on the bottom, which is kinda weird to me. Air is just going to go around the rad there...

Anyways, added some tin to it. It was a pain in the ass.

Now the fan is about 1/3 of the way in, which apparently is where they work best.

Shroud made a huge difference to the running temps. Gauge was all over the place before, and would wander up towards alarming on hills on the highway. Now it sits steady at 1/4 or so on the gauge .

I figured the cooling system was going to need all the help it could get this summer.😬
