Well its been a busy winter so I haven't done much with the 80 but I did make a few changes.

New PSC pump and a second cooler and bigger 2"x8" ram, from 1.5x8. I'm hoping between the two itll give me better steering in the rocks as sometimes Id have to throttle up a lot to get it to turn, especially nose down and bound up a little.

I also went from low steer single shear tie rod to high steer double shear and 1.5" .250 to 2" .250 DOM.

I've seen people do this double shear by just welding plate to the arm but I wanted to do it a little different, so its separate tabs top and bottom and welded fully and bolted through. And of course I could have bought new arms but wheres the fun in that?

I also started working on my he351 swap. Turbo is in and Ive made good progress on the charge air side plumbing. Exhaust is going to suck.

Took the 80 out in the snow a couple times but spent more time on the skidoo.

Nothing major just figured I'd update a little.

So does anyone know what the deal is with photobucket and img hosting? I see some images still seem to work but a couple don't. With this crap they're pulling I guess I'll need to find a new host, any suggestions?

So I was getting some leaking around the bellhousing. Some if it was the oil pan but come to find out there is a slow leak from the rear main, which I had suspected. I figured I'd find more problems when I pulled the trans and its looking like I need a flywheel and clutch. The snout of the input shaft is pretty worn too with pretty pronounced grooves. So I'm wondering if I shouldnt replace it. I'm not sure how much play is normal but I can wiggle it just a bit. I'm out of town for a couple days but am going to start tearing into it to see what other problems I might have. I keep dreaming of a nv4500 swap but thats pretty damn $$$ and I'm not even sure I trust a rebuilt 4500 completely. Midwest and impact have good reputations but I have found some people with issues out there so it seems like a crap shoot no matter what.

I sent some oil samples off and granted I realized its probably been 3 yrs since I changed oil on this getrag and like 2 on the cummins but both came back with high silica, wear metals, and low viscosity. The cummins also came back with an alarming amount of fuel in it. I'd been concerned I had a fuel leak from the input to the IP, one of my guesses as to why I slowly lose prime, but Ive not seen this eng make oil but then again it has also been leaking quite a bit from multiple places... either way it looks like I'll be continuing to chase my tail with this swap. I also continue to fight outrageously high EGTs, two pyros confirm. Even with 2 fairly large water inj nozzles, a full 4" exhaust, a large air filter, an he351, 3" charge air tubes and continuing to back fuel off -- I ditched the PODs in favor of 5x12 145 sac's, swapped out the #2 fuel pin for a #1 fuel pin, backed off full power screw and starwheel. I've pushed the pump towards the head as much as possible and when I put eng in, I checked timing gear. I just don't understand why it gets so hot. Like anytime I pull a slight grade I have to baby it, or Ill climb to 1500 with the quickness. I've driven other cummins and plenty of other diesels and I realize I don't have an IC but its not normal and even injecting water or washed fluid results in next to no reduction of temps.

I'm also wanting to set up a sway bar in the rear. Looking at the TK1 setup. Reasonably priced and should help a lot with body roll.

Also I got the AC in this working so that was a big step towards making this more comfortable on trips. Also did an aero turbine muffler which helped a lot with drone on hwy.

No need to host, just upload them here.

Well... for myself and maybe it'll help some of you, I'll update this with some record of what I've been doing on the 80.

So I left off with the upgrading to a 2x8x1.25 ram with massive swivel eyes and 3/4 bolts. I got that all mounted up and plumbed.

I took it on a quick test run to the rocks. Works great! We'll have to get it out on a serious trail to really know though as where I struggled the most was on a steep decline with tires into rocks.

On to the Getrag being a turd, lots of issues with shifting and just general being a turd. The clutch was hot spotted and the input shaft was chowdered right to hell. First gens use a bronze bushing instead of a needle or roller pilot bearing, FYI.

So I ordered an input shaft from Zumbrota as well as bearings and seals. I also ordered, after discussing my wants/needs with Southbend Clutch, a street dual disk with slightly billet center discs and without the neoprene boots they usually put over them.

I put new bearings in the getrag but did not tear down the main shaft to redo synchros, the only syncrho I could see without pressing the main shaft apart looked good and I figured it was the chowdered bearings, wobble and damage to the input shaft, bad pilot bearing, and crap clutch causing my issues. Stupid. Anyway moving on I but new bearings and seals and got the clutch all bolted in. Plus replaced the rear main seal as that was lightly weeping. Had a hell of a time stabbing the tranny. The bellhousing just will not clear the tunnel with how I have it in there. I stabbed the whole drivetrain as one unit when I built this a few years back. Again, Stupid.

Anyway I got the trans in and had the same exact issues, and the south bend clutch was real weird. Went through a lot of hassle with that.

Not thrilled.

At some point I worked on the AC, theres a separate thread on here for how I went from R12 to R134a with the cummins compressor and factory 92 everything else. Doesn't work as well as the factory r134a in my 97 4runner but it blows pretty cold anyway, and that is NICE.

I'm not as uhh polished as some of you guys but...

Then somewhere in all this I finished up the rear swing out and actually threw some paint on it.

Over new years, winter just hated quite made it, it was depressing. I wanted to snowmobile bad but it was so warm so I thought we'd make the best of it and head out for some camping in the desert. It was a good test run for a few changes I had made here and there, and really highlighted some issues, largely the Getrag. Also really pushed me towards getting some kind of sway bar, it'd been on my to do list for a long time though. I have been since inception and still am fighting high EGTs as well so there were some ideas born there as well.

After the trip I decided to shop around for an NV4500. I ended up purchasing one from High Gear Transmission out of TN. They own the NV4500.com website. I talked to their builder on the phone for a good while and felt pretty good about buying from him. Anyhow pulled the trigger on that and then ordered the Advanced Adapter Getrag to NV4500 bellhousing kit. Pretty straight forward but you need to cut down the input shaft bearing retainer to make clearance. So my buddy turned it down on his lathe for me. This time I bolted up the bellhousing over the clutch and stabbed the tranny through the throwout bearing. Much easier.

Comes with a goofy adapter but pretty much bolts in like the getrag.

This is the later style with the removable shift tower. I had to cut down the shifter a bit to get it to clear the steering wheel, and had my buddy tig it back together for me.

Also grabbed a samsung tab A to use with GAIA maps, pretty excited about that.

I also called up Tony at TK1 racing for a custom sway bar for the rear. Still working on getting it set up though.

And then I decided to try and combat EGTs, I'd try and lower IATs with a dorkel. It just feeds air right under my filter. I also bought a WRX hood scoop I want to add to try and reduce under hood air temps so I'm sucking in even less hot air.

I bought one of the $70 china snorkels with the awful templates, snorkel great, template beyond useless.

I need to finish up the sway bar so I can move on to the next project.

I'm really wanting to figure out my Yukon Grizzly locker issues as that thing pushes me all over the damn road, but I'm hoping this sway bar helps a lot with that. I want an ARB but they're pricey.

I also want to re-gear to 5.38s as I'm just not that pleased with the 4.56s. I just can't quite start out in 2nd gear, and first is annoying. Than and I'd like a little more gearing on the trail. I was really thinking an ORD magnum box but I think the 5.38s would help me out on road and trail and maybe I'll shove a magnum box in down the road. They make one for the first gens that takes place of the dodge np205 adapter housing and sleeve and so the overall drivetrain length only increases 3". So that's where I'm at. Just for posterity.

I’ve talked with those guys at High Gear recently as well. My trans needs replacing and those guys will be where I get it. They seem to know their stuff. My trans is whining so bad I can’t take it anymore.

Yep. Couldn't find anything bad about them anywhere, lots of reccomendations in fact. Did not see stellar reviews for High Impact or Midwest so that really helped to make the decision.
