Welcome, Glen. We are pretty casual about our planning. Make the motel in Blanding Saturday nite (24th) and we'll be wheeling some desert and mountain terrain starting Sunday morning. Monday and Tuesday we plan to be in Monticello, 21 miles north of Blanding as our staging point. How many of our northern cousins are we expecting, all told?

I have booked the motel in Blanding and Monticello (I see the nightly lows are near freezing). I think only the two of us, Drew and myself, will be in Blanding on Sat. as the others (3 other trucks) are leaving latter - perhaps Friday? - takes 2-3 days to get there. I am leaving Wednesday and taking my time (may have time for a few side excursions)

No trailer to flip for me.

Sounds good.

No trailer to flip for me.

So, your leaving the entertainment responsibility up to Drew? No worries, he's proven capable.:hillbilly:

If anyone is interested, I'm heading to Pinetop on Tuesday (27th) afternoon to meet up with my brother who is driving in from Ft. Worth Texas. We are staying at my parents cabin that night and leaving in the morning for Moab. There is room at the cabin if anyone is interested in heading up there as well on Tuesday and caravan with us up to Moab. Just throwing it out there. Otherwise see you all on Wednesday!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Got my official trail assignments:

Thurs/GoldenSpike - Fri/TipToe Behind the Rocks - Sat/Moab Rim

I'm pretty sure I won't be doing Moab Rim on Saturday, but go on White Rim instead...

Gold Bar Rim trail is an in/out trail that has a single obstacle, and that's Buttscratcher Ledge. Steep drop down on the front bumper on the way in, steep climb on the way out. I got stuck last time on the way out, bottom of the ledge was dug out pretty deep, tried to drive it anyway, stuck the truck on the rear bumper, and then my motor died (carb angle...). It's great if that happens when you're leading that trail... I needed a little tug backwards and a rock in the hole. Scenery is pretty cool, you'll see landmarks like Gooney Bird Rock, get to look down Gold Bar Canyon, and you'll end up on the rim across from Arches NP, overlooking Hwy 191, and the Colorado river and Moab down in the valley. The trail used to be a lot of dirt road; erosion has washed a lot of dirt away in recent years, and it has become rough with a good chunk of driving on slickrock.
But it's pretty nice up there - we usually get to drive it as the last part of the Golden Spike trail, and at that time of the day everyone is sort of concentrated and focused on making the last obstacle (i.e. Buttscratcher Ledge...) and getting out, and nobody has time to enjoy that part of the trail. I like it up there, it's neat.

I have only run Gold Bar as the last part of Spike, as Micheal said, we are pretty much used up by then. I would agree that there is only one major obstacle, but lots of "lesser" ones. IIRC in the slick rock area are there are plenty of steps, some are significant sized. The wash area and the climb/descent on the rim is pretty much a long, dusty dirt road, by the time we get there it's pretty much "get me off of this trail" attitude! :hillbilly:

Pix of the ledge in post 167, 168 is the slick rock area after.

If I try to change out from Gold Bar, is there another "must do"that I could do in the minivan?

Is Kane Creek pretty neat?

Thanks
