I put the car in low gear, and then back to drive, tried to activate the crawl control, and got a message on the display that crawl control could not activate and to check the systems manual (or something to that effect).

Stopped to pick up milk, and started it back up...

I parked her into a snow bank, shifted into low gear, and back to drive, then turned on crawl control, and it worked!?!

I was wondering if the car needs to be in a tight position before the crawl control turns on, or if the -20degF could be too cold for the system to work.

Has anyone had problems, is what I am experiencing normal, would my first ever try at crawl control be a warning only? Just wondering if any one could shed some light on their experiences.

You may not of locked your CDL the first time. Or, you activated Crawl Control BEFORE the CDL locked-in despite you pushing the CDL button. The CDL needs to be locked before CrawlC will work.

You are probably right, as it hasn't happened since the first try. I may have been too eager to try it out the first time, then just frustrated when it didn't work.
I'm used to my 80...it locks, in no time...Center, back and front. The thing is still a beaut for 4wheelin. It will be nice to compare the two this summer.

If you don't mind me asking....

I'm new to the crawl control. I"m used to old fashioned lockers.

So i tried the crawl control in a couple of situations, none of them were really "hard core"... First time in some snow. When i used crawl control, the truck lunges almost uncontrollably? No matter which speed i used but mostly the slowest setting. Maybe i was doing something wrong?

Second time was on a dirt hill... not super steep, but i used crawl control, let me foot off the pedal and it again lunged it's way up the hill. WTF?! Is that normal?

I am like you - used to lockers, not crawl. Playing with it in the alley behind my house, when it's on the slowest speed, it bucks and lunges when starting. Also lots of brake pulsing. Medium speed and high speed much less so. I am wondering what it will be like when crawling real rocks.

i am saving my money for an elocker for the rear axle, so I have the option.

Does it lunge if you don't use crawl control and just hold your foot on the brake and let go in 4WD LO?

This is normal. It uses braking to keep traction so it's jerky. Climbing over stuff (rocks/shelves) is the best use I've noticed. On many occasions I've been unable to find traction climbing a boulder, only to put it in crawl and pop right over it. Lockers will be superior though.

@LALC that jerking is your Atrac kicking in - its funky at best
crawl is a smoother modulation of your brakes doing their thing - not jerky at all

it only lunges with crawl control activated.

Perhaps it was not designed for use on flat ground? Basically if i activate crawl control and let my foot off the brake or accelerator, my truck will lunge and then stop, lunge, stop... over and over until it seems to get worse and worse. If i switch the controller to a higher speed setting it doesn't lunge as bad, but still does.

interesting that flat land could be the culprit to the lung. like others I'm in up or down hill scenarios when I activate that function, never flat.

Prerequisites is that you are in low range, in "D" or "R", and be on the brakes.

It's likely you were in neutral the first time you tried it out. Have to be in drive with brakes on when hitting the crawl button.

It it herky jerky in the lowest speed on flat ground. This changes with any real load or impediments. The clicking clacking noises are completely normal.

Many moons ago, if you didn't search and bring up an old post that deals with your question, you would get flamed! Guess that has calmed down some.

I shifted into N, foot on the brake, turned the dial to L, pushed the center diff lock button, engaged the crawl control, selected lowest speed setting, put in drive, let my foot off the brake.... lunge, lunge, lunge.....

You never shifter into D?

I don't believe you have to lock the center differential for crawl control to work. Mine works fine without locking it.
